Also, the Phillies claimed lefty-hitting infielder Greg Dobbs off waivers from the Seattle Mariners.

Dobbs, 28, split last season between Class AAA Tacoma and Seattle. He batted .370 (10-for-27) with three doubles, one triple and three RBIs in 37 games with the Mariners. As a pinch-hitter, he went 5-for-17 (.294).

He plays 3B but not very well. He doesn't hit too well either.

Gillick came to the M's in 2000, Dobbs though was drafted in 1996. He reached AA by the end of Gillick's final year in Seattle in 2003. So for those wondering, yes... another Gillick connection. Gotta love it.

So, he's a perfect replacement for Nunez!

Every single video I just watched of him at MLB.com is a weak ground ball right back up the middle, every time, in all 3 videos. Hopefully he plays some defense.

I'd rather have Lou Dobbs.

So a quite decent hitter in the minors. In the majors, not so much. Oldish.
We now know that Amaro really is running the Phillies. He and Monty seem to have ignored the committee.

How do you come to the conclusion that he doesn't hit very well? In the minors he hit very well, but until last year he did not hit well in his brief time in the majors. Last year in a small number of at bats in the majors he hit very well.

It has. The Phillies found themselves in an ususual situation when they set their 40-man roster. They had around 30 players. They lost a bunch of free agents and while they signed some, it wasn't as many. They didn't have the minor leaguers to add. Teams waive players when their 40 is full, so Gillick is able to take advantage of that. He can grab a player he wants to give a look see. Nothing to lose. Something to gain. Dumpster diving is good if you can do it.

I think this puts them at 38 (or 39 with Alfonseca). If he has to waive someone later due to signing or trade, he'll do that.

So you don't think the Phils should sign Latin Americans?

also, this guy seem to be nothing more than a guy to look at in spring training, why is it such a huge deal?

Flyers are cooked, Eagles are done, Sixers stink... that's why people are blowing this out of proportion. It's really not a huge deal. I don't see a whole lot to lose with the guy, maybe he can replace Nunez in 08 while Costanzo gets his last year of seasoning? We'll see.

C'mon RT, Gillick is bringing in many options and will cut any of them who do not pan out...don't forget he does admit his mistakes after they have hurt the team and has gotten rid of them...well except Nunez & Rowand...and no it does not matter that we do not bring in good players or that we dump good players, just you wait Gillick has a plan and will build us into a winner soon...

Both the Texas League and the PCL are hitters leagues. Dobbs really doesn't have much power. And he won't get on base all that well at the big league level. If he was a slick fielding middle infielder he would have some value. But he's a poor fielding 3Bman.

The Mariners are really hurting for guys who can hit. And they have kept him at Tacoma because he just isn't very good.

According to this, he didn't get his pro career started until his mid-20s. That could be something. But most likely the upside for Dobbs is that he helps Ottawa win some games. Nothing wrong with that, of course.

Maybe FTN is the right person to ask for this, but when is Costanzo getting here? I just threw it out there at the end of the last post on page 1, but what is his track? April 2009?

You're preaching to the choir, my friend. At this point I'd be very excited to see a trade for Jacque Jones. And I don't really like Jacque Jones...
