Well I wasn't sure if he was going in the wayback machine and suggesting we should have drafted Manny.

I hadn't forgotten that, I thought maybe he knew that we picked Tyler Green in front of him.
Although the Cubs took Doug Glanville one pick before the Indians picked Manny.

Wow. Did not know that Manny was drafted as 3b.

Thanks for the link... I just wasted 20 minutes or so going through the drafts of the early to mid 1990s.

Though the Phillies obviously made mistakes, they also got the best player (so far) from the 1996 draft in Jimmy Rollins. One probably could say the same about 2000 (Utley) and maybe '01 (Howard).

Haha, I did the same thing. Yeah, I was browsing through the 1996 draft. It was pretty awful. I'm actually compiling a "what could have been" (with hindsight 20/20, of course) Phillies team which I think I will make on my MLB 07 game.
Not sure if this has been brought up before, but we drafted Bruce Ruffin two picks ahead of Randy Johnson

Just eyeballing some things...

Anyone know what the deal was in 1997 where the Nats/Expos got 7 compensation picks? And that they ALL sucked.

Also, the Yanks originally drafted Mark Prior 43rd overall in 1998. Wonder how his career could have been different if he signed.

well, they were probably only offering below slot deals, and that really limits the kind of talent that you can take. if you're signing 5th round talent, it doesn't matter that you took them in the first, they're still 5th round talent.
if you don't know what the wrestlers are trying to do--how certain moves and holds are supposed to work and so forth, then it might just look like too sweaty guys rolling around on a mat.

Oh. I'm replying to a Steagles post. Um. OK.

You'd be surprised by how many stars we could have had and just picked either A) league average guys or B) never even made the majors guys.
Once I get a decent amount together, I'll post a thread about it.

One of those comp picks was from losing John Patterson during the whole Travis Lee / Bobby Seay fiasco of the previous year. I think they got one for losing Moises Alou to Florida....etc...

thankfully this guy didn't either:

June 3, 1997: Drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2nd round of the 1997 amateur draft, but did not sign.

Chase Utley

2nd round wasn't that bad in '97. Produced Wolf, Jeff Weaver, Utley, Ankiel, Aaron Cook.

And will you also post the numbers for other franchises to demonstrate that the phillies are not alone in these mistakes or will you slant it to make the phillies look most incompetent?

I think Pat Burrell/Mark Mulder may have been the best 1/2 picks in the draft ever.

Maybe ARod/Dreifort beats them out...
