The best month in baseball history?

The best month in baseball history?

Postby FTN » Fri Aug 03, 2007 00:46:26

For an individual player. Anyone wanna take some guesses? Splits, per baseball reference, only go back to 1957 I believe, so we'd probably have to say from 55 till now. Post some cool stat lines

Barry Bonds, April 1993: .431/.553/.889 in 94 PA. 7 HR, 25 RBI, 21 BB, 297 sOPS+
Barry Bonds, Sept 2001: .403/.607/1.078 in 117 PA. 16 HR, 25 RBI, 38 BB, 341 sOPS+

Go.

OBP in the .330 range, though. Guess it doesn't matter when 2/3 of your hits are dingers

I looked at that one, because I thought he would have better numbers overall, but his average was only .298, OBP .331 and he only had, I think , 6 walks. It was also striking that he had only a .206 BABIP that month.

A-Rod's April sOPS+ (split OPS+) was only 245. The September 2001 for Bonds was a ridiculous 341. Bonds hit 16 HR and only had 25 RBI because his team sucked and no one was ever on ahead of him. He drew 38 walks in a single month...crazy.

Poo-holes, April 2006: .346/.509/.914, 14 HR, 32 RBI, sOPS+ of 264.
Howard, Sept 2006: .385/.562/.750, 9 HR, 21 RBI, sOPS+ of 245

Ironically, Howard hit 14 HR in August of 2006, but his OB% was only .464, with an identical .750 slugging, but a sOPS+ of 212.

What a 2 month stretch for the big man. We could use another one of those.

A couple of earlier feats that probably deserve mention:

Rudy York: 18HRs, 49 RBI in August 1937.

Joe Dimaggio: 53 RBI in august 1939

I'll go in a diffrent direction,how about sept 5,to sept 28 of 1988.

Orel Hershiser 59 scoreless innings.four innings were in august so i'll keep them out.

I wonder if there's ever been as big a difference from one month to the next as Burrell's June to July.

.129 .276 .274 .550 sOPS+ 47
.435 .564 .768 1.332 sOPS+ 249

Utley almost came close last July to August
.425 .475 .755 1.230 sOPS+ 207
.246 .320 .307 .627 sOPS+ 66
