I was listening to Vijay Iyer radio on spotify, and it played a track by a guy named Dave Douglas, which I liked a lot. So I'm going to listen to some more of this. Has he been mentioned in this thread? Any of you guys know anything about him beyond what Spotify says?

Great ears there, TV. Douglas is a major trumpet force in this fecund era for jazz performance. Don't think we've dwelt on him; my brass favorites are Adam O'Farrill, Michael Rodriguez, and Avishai Cohen. There's a bunch more great players.

What do you think of Iyer? NYC hipsters positively swoon over him (weird to be in a club & have a few hundred people yelling full throttle for a jazz musician), and my feeling is he's driven lots of really great playing in the past 10ish years.
Yes, but in a double utley you can put your utley on top they other guy's utley, and you're the winner. (Swish)

I've probably posted about this before, but William parker/raining on the moon's cornmeal dance has moments of aching beauty. You should listen.

I heard for the first time Gold and Silver by Quicksilver Messenger Service (on Tom Petty's Buried Treasure show on XM) and instantly recognized it as built around the riff from Brubeck's Take Five

I dunno if I heard any while he was alive. I loved his first 3 albums but stopped paying attention long ago.

I stumbled upon his Buried Treasure show when I got the XM app on my phone. It's like he's talking to me from the grave. Turns out his musical taste and mine overlap a lot, but he was born 6 years before me so I hear some more formative stuff. It's true roots rock radio. I like his corny gags and the whole feel of the show.

Interestingly, it’s in 6/8 instead of 5/4.

I hadn't heard of him before so checked out the samples on iTunes. Strong Alice Coltrane vibe in several of the tunes. I dig it.
