Dont know them - but 3 bands were denied access to SXSW and artists and even people on ESTA visas are being turned back. It's really bad. And the backlash is going to impact American's going abroad. This will lead to isolationism and more nationalistic insanity.

I'm glad none of my social media accounts use my real name, and you can be sure if I go abroad I won't even have those apps on my devices -- nor email.

Nuts... just nuts... this time slice...

Tickets are now available for the Center City Jazz Festival April 29. Went a couple years ago and it's a nice event for tyros like me who want to get a good sampling of styles and performers.

My feeling is everyone should go in order to listen to Odean Pope because he's a Philadelphian and because who would not kill to be named Odean Pope

I saw this trio do all these tunes live at the Painted Bride circa '83 - I played this record on Moers a lot back then.

(for you non-jazz guys - this is a bit different - check it out)

You are like the jazz Batman, Kid! Incredible stuff, as is/was your Woody Shaw selection.

Apparently I Called Him Morgan was released last September, documenting Philly guy Lee Morgan's life & death, & presumably focused on his post-heroin recovery & time with wife/eventual murderer Helen. You might say Morgan was saved, & killed, by - not brotherly, or sisterly...possibly 'motherly'? - love.

Image

Anyway, its first US screenings took place earlier this month, and according to the schedule at the film's website, the Landmark Ritz at the Bourse booked it for Friday, April 7 - inexplicably, its first and ONLY Philadelphia screening.

So, catch the Nats-Phils game in the afternoon, then go see the movie, right?

Not so fast; the R at the B does NOT show the movie on its list of coming attractions, and NEITHER does the film's Facebook page - and we know NO one lies on Facebook.

So, what to do? Well, you could write the Ritz & ask them what's up with that. I mean, if you have any civic and/or cultural pride, that is.

Aw man. Really liked him. Great track on a McCoy Tyner record called 4X4 with Arthur and McCoy. I couldn't find it on youtube -

rip..

Not sure if this is THE track, but this is A track from 4 x 4 featuring Blythe on sax.

YES - this is it. Not sure why I couldn't find it? I've found it in the past. I own this on vinyl --

Just for the record, whomever added that file to YouTube also added an "n" to Lenox Avenue (Blythe's label didn't do so on the jacket)

That could be cool. In general, I'm not in to naming bridges and schools and venues after people - we focus too much on posterity. Keep in the now. But since I'm alone in that view - yeah - let Sonny get his bridge.

The Ig has cut a few jazz tracks, with Steve Swallow, Bobby Previte, and someone I never heard of.

He relates his thoughts about doing so in recognizable Iggy Pop fashion, notwithstanding his Rolling Stone interviewer straining the gravitational bonds of intellectual pretension (& how's that for doing so?).

Also Mr. Pop has celebrated his 70th birthday, which while he's always appeared to be in pretty good physical shape seems to defy some odds of something somewhere.
