Do you know of a station down there that specializes in a lot of the stuff they played on Treme? The show was mediocre but the music fantastic. I'm thinking of getting all the CDs from the show...
I picked up some great CDs when I visited New Orleans 3 years ago March ... got the Trombone Shorty with that track everyone knows now ... good record store there gave me a lot of good recs -- Dumpstaphunk some other great stuff
I'll add WWOZ to my favorites list on TuneIn Radio thnx!

I'm also a huge jazz vocalist fan - and always anxious to discover new voices hitting the scene.
I'm not able to even keep up with all the stuff in Bay Area
Pedrito Martinez is tip-top, mainly thanks to Ariacne Trujillo's showstopping voice (there's a vocalist for you, Kid - though she hasn't ventured out on her own much as yet)and I also dig latin and brazilian stuff so there's even more

I got turned on to this album because one of the players is Pete Christlieb, who played on early Tom Waits stuff.
Then their session work on Steely Dan's Aja earned them a shot at a jazz collaboration. Nice twin tenors.
Marsh died onstage at the Los Angeles club Donte's in 1987, in the middle of playing the tune "Out of Nowhere".

Best jazz moment ever was in a smoky basement club - The Village Vanguard - in 1975 or 76. Every Monday night, the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis big band played. A tiny cover and a 2-drink minimum to hear those legends.

That Monday night thing went on a long time, because I'm a few years younger than you and I think I saw it in 80-81-82?
Or else, I just heard about it - but I feel like I saw/heard it. Some nice memories of that venue in my younger days in NYC.

Music is 40s swing-ish - but posted here for the combination of the tune (the prelude lasts about 30 seconds, then the tune kicks in), and the group.
America - what a country
More about the group, and a project one of their daughters is currently working on
