I would be enthused to exchange resources with anyone here who follows Jazz.

So for instance -- if you are a user of TuneIn Radio, you can stream on your mobile device KPFA radio. On Saturday afternoons west coast time, are Art Sato "In You Ear" and Horace Mansfield "Point of Departure" they publish in real-time the playlist and Horace has an e-mail list with all his playlists.

KCSM is non-profit San Mateo Calif and mostly Jazz and Latin Jazz.

WRTI in Philly splits Jazz and Classical, and WXPN in Philly also does some jazz or jazz-ish programming.

WBGO 88.something -- in North Jersey is the Jazz station for New York, very WRTI like.

I'm not up on Spotify or Pandora channels, or SoundCloud, BandCamp or Reverbnation links for Jazz podcasts or jazz artists but I assume there are some.

We could have a running thread of Jazz recs for different styles and eras like "1960 Blue Note recs" (Wayne Shorter Ju Ju, Art Blakey "Indestructible", Andrew Hill "Point of Departure" McCoy Tyner "The Real McCoy", Larry Young "Unity" ) that type of thing --

But if anyone would recommend podcasts, or blogs that they think are first rate - or any kind of streaming channels that have good Jazz programming.

I personally, am less in need of historical stuff unless its obscure stuff -- and more interested in artists that are current that I'm not as familar with - or soing cross-over stuff.

Of late, I've been in to The Bad Plus, which have been around a lot longer than I knew. It's a piano-bass-drums trio but they do some adventurous stuff.

I'm also a huge jazz vocalist fan - and always anxious to discover new voices hitting the scene.

The nicest part of internet and radio, is that you can listen locally or through wifi and also get the playlists -- circle the tracks you like the most and get to Amazon if you are still a collector like me of CDs, vinyl and or downloads...

I'm not able to even keep up with all the stuff in Bay Area -- and I also dig latin and brazilian stuff so there's even more - but I feel a little out of the scene these days and trying to pay more attention.

As always, YouTubes and links are welcomed!

I'll try to post a few soon -- some classics and maybe some stuff more obscure.

WWOZ out of New Orleans isn't a jazz station exactly, but it plays a lot of jazz in a non-purist format.

Do you know of a station down there that specializes in a lot of the stuff they played on Treme? The show was mediocre but the music fantastic. I'm thinking of getting all the CDs from the show...

I picked up some great CDs when I visited New Orleans 3 years ago March ... got the Trombone Shorty with that track everyone knows now ... good record store there gave me a lot of good recs -- Dumpstaphunk some other great stuff

I'll add WWOZ to my favorites list on TuneIn Radio thnx!

Probably WWOZ would be your best bet. DJ Davis was based I think on a WWOZ DJ.

Kid, I'm not much of a resource - and most of what resources I could suggest you're already onto. Example: WBGO (88.3) in NJ. Great station, they get involved in plenty of live regional events and their programming is consistently good. They like to do full-day programs on anniversaries of various pillars of the music - not something you program if you're in it for the money.

I browse All About Jazz occasionally, and generally download the PDF of the New York City Jazz Record for its live events calendar. Their takes on the Best of 2014 is in the January edition (look out, big-ass PDF there). You'll be happy to hear that The Bad Plus's The Rite of Spring is among their Best Albums of the Year picks :-D

I'm also a huge jazz vocalist fan - and always anxious to discover new voices hitting the scene.

Wouldn't have guessed this Kid. I'm not much on vocals, but in 2013 2 of my favorite releases featured vocalists. One was Gregory Porter (still a big fan), & the other was Paul Marinaro, a guy who basically recorded a vanity record in his dad's memory - he's a competent performer, but for some reason his respect for his dad really shone through for me.

Heard a bit of Catharine Russell a few weeks ago during NYC's winter jazzfest, and liked Cecile McLorin Salvant's set last August at Newport - but she's a bit too schooled for me, as are most vocalists, if you know what I mean.

Here's Brianna Thomas, the latest "it girl" jazz singer, with someone I've never heard of, but plan to do so forthwith - Milton Suggs* (bandleader/vocalist). Thomas doesn't sing until about 4 minutes in - it's worth the wait. Just imagine wandering through a big-city park (this is Chicago's Millenium Park) and coming across this outfit playing:

I'm not able to even keep up with all the stuff in Bay Area

yeah, you've got some enviable resources there with the newly fitted out museum, and somebody's taken over Yoshi's I understand...?
and I also dig latin and brazilian stuff so there's even more
Pedrito Martinez is tip-top, mainly thanks to Ariacne Trujillo's showstopping voice (there's a vocalist for you, Kid - though she hasn't ventured out on her own much as yet)

* this is too weird - before I completed this post, I was glancing at a copy of the aforesaid NYC Jazz Record. Turns out Suggs sang with our girl singer, Cyrille Aimee, at a joint in NYC just last night.
Yes, but in a double utley you can put your utley on top they other guy's utley, and you're the winner. (Swish)

WKCR (Columbia University's station is doing a 3 day broadcast of what seems to be all Clark Terry.

http://www.studentaffairs.columbia.edu/ ... -broadcast

I recall them doing something along those lines when Sun Ra moved on.

As far as vocalists go, he's not strictly Jazz, but Antoine Diel in New Orleans has an amazing voice. If you go down there, he's likely performing somewhere on any given night.
http://www.antoinediel.com/

There's definitely something interesting happening in New Orleans--the economics seem to be that people are getting regular gigs enough to make a living, and it doesn't make economic sense for them to leave the city. There's a definite DIY thing with recordings as well. On the other hand, the whole thing hinges on tourists, so it's all pretty accessible with mostly people re-interpreting familiar songs. On the other hand, there's a lot of mixing stuff going, so you've got hip hop crossing with brass bands and other neat stuff.

One other source that seems to reliably turn up something good about 3-4 times a year is JazzWax. Marc Myers will write you back, particularly if you turn up something he's written about, or is planning to. His tastes are quirky, veering toward kitschy, but he's a hardworking mother.

Here, by way of eulogy, he recounts a conversation/interview he did with Clark Terry. Among other things, Terry tells him about recording with Monk.

Apogee by Pete Christlieb & Warne Marsh.

I got turned on to this album because one of the players is Pete Christlieb, who played on early Tom Waits stuff.

Then their session work on Steely Dan's Aja earned them a shot at a jazz collaboration. Nice twin tenors.

niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice indeed, thanks for sharing this. Marsh's collaborations with Lennie Tristano (Intuition, in particular) are generally part of any "essentials" list, rightly so.

geez, I just looked up Marsh's Wikipedia entry - I knew he's been dead awhile, but check how he went out:

Marsh died onstage at the Los Angeles club Donte's in 1987, in the middle of playing the tune "Out of Nowhere".

Like reggae - my knowledge of jazz stopped growing 30 years ago.

Best jazz moment ever was in a smoky basement club - The Village Vanguard - in 1975 or 76. Every Monday night, the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis big band played. A tiny cover and a 2-drink minimum to hear those legends.

That Monday night thing went on a long time, because I'm a few years younger than you and I think I saw it in 80-81-82?

Or else, I just heard about it - but I feel like I saw/heard it. Some nice memories of that venue in my younger days in NYC.

Not quite jazz, but around 1980 I was in Chapel Hill NC and we went to a small club to hear some bluesmen. My buddy knew who they were, I didn't (then). The crowd was so small that we sat in a circle with the two guys playing. I think we paid $5 or so.

Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee.

Happened upon this collection, essentially the complete recorded works of Lansdale PA's Jane Fielding (nee Mary Jane Cranston):

Image

Making music with some notables here in various combinations; Kenny Drew, Red Mitchell, Paul Chambers, Leroy Vinnegar - though not Teddy Edwards, as advertised on the 'jacket'.

She recorded just 2 jazz albums, in the mid-50s, and passed away in 1997.

Distinctive, woody/smoky, June Christy-ish contralto. Here's a taste:

Went down to the Center city jazz Festival this afternoon. Listened to the George Burton Trio at Chris' and the Fresh Cut Orchestra at Milkboy. Liked both band and venue better at Chris' as Milk boy was stuffed with 20-somethings and with mostly just canned beer and wine in a plastic glass to help the music go down. But I was glad to see excellent attendance at all the show. Think this has grown from last year, ans should continue to do so. Maybe next year not so many acts will be in the early and mid-afternoon. I'm surprised they were able to find enough musicians up by those hours.

DiM, you say you're not an aficionado, but if you have aficion for this recording, you're off to a fast start. I hadn't heard of the compilation, but it features several stellar musicians, and I've heard a few of the cuts (Joe Henderson's Black Narcissus is a favorite)

Gonna go ahead & bet you haven't seen this before.

Music is 40s swing-ish - but posted here for the combination of the tune (the prelude lasts about 30 seconds, then the tune kicks in), and the group.

America - what a country

More about the group, and a project one of their daughters is currently working on

Interesting - never heard of them. I might give $25 for the project. Amazing they are all alive in their 90's!
