And it's hard enough to wind up with ONE great name let alone 2, but Abdullah Ibrahim/Dollar Brand

Ahmad Jamal/Fritz Russell Jones isn't as good?

it's right up there

I figure Grimes should check into our adopted girl singer, Cyrille Aimee

She's performing with what seems like increasing regularity in NYC, at Birdland & other prominent venues

whimsy

She has musical talent, and also fairly clearly enjoys the 'entertainment' element of performance - kinda provides an example of the kind of jazz musician TV expresses appreciation of upthread, and, well, er, um, she's got an approachable quality....

Wouldn't say I'd lay out to attend her performing a set of the same kind of thing, but I like that it's A kind of thing she can do, & enjoy.

so, whimsy. Whimsy can be hot

Duke Ellington swings - no, I mean, he swings. Sort of. Probably as good a hitter as mini-Mart.

Pretty sure the "colored" on the motel sign is not a reference to their tv options. 1955, at least:

Hey, I did not realize this: someone has designated April as Jazz Appreciation Month

You did, and she is, Kid. The re-post was to give a new boarder, Grimes, a flavor of some vocalists people here had remarked on, and also because Aimee's been getting regular dates at Birdland & other higher-profile clubs.

Anyway, apparently a a festival commemorating Dolphy will be held May 30/31 at Montclair (NJ) State

Booked participants include Don Byron, Henry Threadgill, Marty Erlich, Grachan Moncur III, Nasheet Waits

I like to listen to this album late at night, especially this song as I’m drifting off to sleep. Makes me feel all funny.

How dare you interrupt my Lime Rickey!

NYC Winter Jazzfest '15 partial lineup is out. They had their 10-year anniversary week-long blowout last year, the performers for which were, frankly, meh.

This year they're back to mainly Fri=Sat Jan 9-10, and there are legions of fine players/ensembles. A few examples:

Ambrose Akinmusire Quartet

Arturo O'Farrill's "Boss Level” Septet

Catherine Russell

The Cookers

Dafnis Prieto Sextet

Dan Weiss Large Ensemble

Dave Douglas Quintet

David Murray Clarinet Summit w/ Don Byron, David Krakauer, and Hamiet Bluiett

David Murray w/ Geri Allen and Terri Lyne Carrington

Frank Vignola and Friends

JD Allen Trio w/ Gregg August & Rudy Royston

Linda Oh’s Sun Pictures

Marc Ribot's YOUNG PHILADELPHIANS W/ STRINGS

Marcus Strickland's Twi-Life feat. Jean Baylor

Oliver Lake Organ Quartet

Rudresh Mahanthappa's Bird Calls (The Charlie Parker Project)

SFJAZZ Collective: Originals and the Music of Michael Jackson

Wallace Roney Quintet

Why not a little Bossa Nova? Baden Powell was nothing short of mind-blowing. Yowza.
