Try out the sofa bed and you won’t be dozing at all, but your back will hurt.

I’ll say a sofa bed is no bitching gadget, but a gadget to bitch about.

Get a futon with an inner spring or memory foam mattress.

i think it's Apple's most underrated product. The design is perfect. Not sure what you know about them, but you literally connect them to your phone one time by opening the pod case near your phone. a second later and pods and phone are linked, and that's it. Every time you put the pods in your ear your music starts playing. Take one out and it pauses. You can program what a double tap on each pod does. and the case is a charger.

So happy

Going play/pause right and Siri left. I had never used Siri before and am realizing how convenient it can be

Then don't get one of the big lumpy pillows on a pallet. I'd rather sleep on a good futon than any sleeper sofa I've seen.

A futon would actually be a legit option, and from the looks of it considerably cheaper than all but the crappiest sleeper sofas.

Back to something more appropriate for this thread -- looking for an inexpensive MP3 player for one of my kids. Also I've been out of the game so long I'm not sure where are the best places to download music...

how will your kid be using it? downloading mp3s and putting on a player seems like a hassle.

Uh... I don't know, how do you use such things? I haven't used one since "downloading mp3s and putting it on a player" was the only game in town.

i mean is (s)he going to be using it on the school bus or while away from internet? would a $30 fire tablet work with a spotify subscription instead? Why does it have to be an mp3 player

If you want a queen size futon that is actually comfortable to sleep on, it can get kinda pricey.

Metal frame 200
Wood frame 250-450
Innerspring mattress 250-350
Memory foam/gel topper 50-100
Futon cover 50-100

You can go cheaper but you don't want to be sleeping on a sack of flour or feeling the support bars.

I bought a couple of these on sale and cheap frames for my guest rooms but I have the luxury of leaving them set up. Very comfortable especially for the price I paid.

if you go that route... i have one of these for my spare bedroom/office.

worked well as an everyday bed for a while.

Not sure about age of kids and stuff, but for the middle (11), I use a moto e4 phone. We connect it to our google play family subscription for music, and audible for audiobooks. Our library has a couple of free services for music and audiobooks, overdrive and hoopla.

The value-add is that I can throw in a Google Fi data card, and then he can use hangouts to talk to me when he's at a sleepover or a friends for the afternoon, or roaming the neighborhood where there isn't wifi and I can get in touch with him if I need to. Google kid's management lets us control apps he has access too, at night I shut off Hangouts and games so he's not up playing games all night.

Downside to that particular model phone - there's a security issue with bluetooth, so it has been shut off, so you can't use bluetooth devices with, including game accessories like pokemon go watch. Over the summer, we upgraded to a moto g4.

And on the sofa bed, you might want to check the IKEA ones - especially if it's mostly kids using the sofa part. I think it's all thick cushions, without the springs and stuff that make sofa beds uncomfortable and heavy.

A good futon is also heavy as all get out, if that is a concern at all.

Inflatable mattress and a couple bean bag chairs for seating. Flexible and comfortable.

We went with essentially this solution for our guest room and it has worked out great. But for the playroom I need to be able to put away the bed. Not enough closet space so some sort of convertible will be needed.

@Mrs Vox, I did look at Ikea and their convertible sofas would do the trick I think, particularly with a memory foam topper. Problem is transportation. I'm fairly certain I can't fit the boxes in either of our cars, and they want about $200 to deliver to us out in the sticks. (Then again, this might end up cheaper than other options...)
