I was looking at the Russian trade deficit yesterday. Russian imports coming into the US outweigh russian exports about 3 to 1.

Full disclosure: I was wondering what Russia produces that doesn't just come out of the ground. They make almost nothing. Some heavy machinery and a few agricultural products, but that's it. They basically just rape their environment to balance their budgets. I REALLY wish the world would just cut them off, but Europe needs their natural gas, I guess.

Before we fall all over ourselves declaring victory, this brought up a few issues I haven't read anywhere else.

True story: when I was in high school, I had a nun for my senior religion class who told us God had given her the gift of being able to speak in tongues. Now when you read about speaking in tongues in the Bible, it is invariably from the Acts of the Apostles where the apostles come out from hiding after Jesus’s crucifixion and resurrection and the subsequent persecution of his followers, having now been touched by the Holy Spirit (the feast of Pentecost celebrated 50 days after Easter), and suddenly they could preach the Gospel and everybody regardless of language could understand them.

I understood this to mean that someone with the gift of tongues could speak all languages - or maybe there would be something like Star Trek’s universal translator - and in any event I was super jazzed to see this.

So she comes in and starts blessing each one of us in a bunch of unintelligible indistinguishable nonsense noises, one at a time. I was so disappointed.

This was the end of my religious period.

My sweet mother-in-law (from READING, PA) spent her whole professional career helping underprivileged kids. Despite being a lifelong Republican she still surprised us by voting for Trump in 2016. We chalked it up to her hate for Hillary. She had a few drinks the other night and my wife begged her to tell us she would be voting for Biden. She won't. She said that if Biden wins we won't be able to buy cars and will become another North Korea! WTF!! She doesn't watch Fox News or any other news channel except occasionally BBC. She does get the Reading Eagle every day but this has to be from Facebook right? My wife and I were speechless and could not talk any sense into her.

This shit isn't over. There are still people all over like my MIL that'll vote for Trump.

I had a similar experience with my dad and stepmom last week, but they do watch FOX News. They basically consider Biden and Pelosi a tag team devil.

I mean hopefully the numbers area true and this is just anecdotal

people just really believe that any sort of government intervention is bad. and hey, there's a lot of great examples of that! there's a lot of examples of the US toppling communist and socialist regimes across the world. its a good line of attack by the republicans to paint the democratic vision/path foward as that. good example is venezuela right now.
