regularly random randomonium

I never use the dishwasher. I just wash the dishes right after I use them so it never builds up. Then again I’m only one person. Forever alone.

If the dishwasher is empty and I make and eat a solo dish, I will hand wash my dishes if I’m not in a rush, but if there’s already stuff in there or there’s other dirty dishes around, I’ll load up the dishwasher. We probably run about 8 loads a week through the dishwasher, so I’d say it’s a pretty nice convenience.

I can see the overrated aspect. You have to clean the dishes somewhat before loading a dish. It doesn't save as much total time as it may first appear.

I used to absolutely hate washing dishes. It was my least favorite household chore. Now I don't mind it at all, and sometimes it's even relaxing.

I find folding laundry relaxing. Washing dishes not so much. But I agree that dishwashers are overrated. First, in my experience, they are the least reliable major appliance. Second, they are the most expendable. You need a refrigerator, you pretty much need a stove/oven (and those, in my experience, almost never break) not having a washer/dryer is a major inconvenience. But a dishwasher? Fixing/replacing that can wait.

There’s no other appliance where you do what the appliance does before using it. When our old dishwasher broke I wanted to turn the space into more cabinets. My wife wanted a new dishwasher. I hate the new dishwasher

I would also imagine it drains a dumb amount of unnecessary water like a car wash or something as if you ate your linguini off-roading or something

I have lived most of my post college life without a dishwasher and am glad I have one now

But I'd trade it in a heartbeat for a washer dryer in my unit rather than in the basement

actually washing by hand uses 3-5x more water than a modern dishwasher

So it's one of your more eco-friendly appliances

that's what prompted this. we have people over pretty often. b the time we get to cleaning up after people are over shit is caked on and you gotta scrub anyway, so might as well wash it. pretty much how i feel about all the dishes

I don't think I've ever heard a song by Ed Sheeran.

Jeremy Renner is living his best life. I saw him in a Jeep commercial that concludes with him singing with a band. Get that money.

if you haven't already switched over to reusable bags, DO IT! it is very liberating. I used to have plastic bags all over the place. I do always forget to bring the reusables into the store, but I just bag the stuff from the cart when I get to the car. Much less clutter around now. And to pick up the slack where these were necessary, I've purchased small biodegradable trash bags for the dog poop.

seconded.

You have to buy the plastic bags in europe and china, so I got into the habit of bringing bags. It's great.

On a similar note, I started taking take-out/tupperware containers to places when I order take out. It only works if you are ordering the take-out in person, but it saves all the extra take-out containers and plastic stuff. Sometimes, the restaurant will even give you extra stuff because they don't have to pay for the cost of containers and they like not using the extra plastic. Another side benefit is that the containers usually seal better than those the restaurant would give you, so less chance of spillage, which was an issue when riding the train and getting chinese an hour away from home.
