Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle and Secretary of State Brian Kemp advanced to a Republican runoff for governor of Georgia.

With two-thirds of the vote tallied, the Associated Press declared them the top two finishers in a six-candidate field. Cagle led Kemp by about 12 percentage points.

But since neither was on pace to win a majority of the vote, they will face off in a July 24 one-on-one runoff.

Immigration was a focal point of the GOP campaign. Cagle ran ads on his passage of a “sanctuary city” ban. In one of Kemp’s ads, he is pictured in a pickup truck and says he could use it in case he needs to “round up criminal illegals and take them home myself.”

The winner will face Democratic nominee Stacey Abrams, who is trying to become the country’s first black female governor.

Their silence is taken as acquiescence.”
