My Mate Gerry Loves Politics

I think that the Stoneman Douglas kids have a great point about organized protests and being effective that the ‘show up and yell’ set needs to learn from. I did not find the UCLA protests of the treasury secretary during his speech at all useful or impactful.

West Virginia is showing how effective 'show up and yell' protests can be if there's also an actual ask.

That's pretty similar to my take on it. It's more beautiful portrait of unnamed black woman than portrait of Michelle Obama.

There are a handful of protest movements that made a huge impact despite tremendous odds. Early labor organizing and civil rights come to mind. Both were protracted striggles. Both had pretty specific goals. The fight for women's right to vote was another. Finally, I think there's a lot to learn from act up in the early days of the aids epidemic. These kids seems like they've learned some key lessons from these movements. Contrast that with utter ineffectiveness of occupy and a lot of the wasted energy from activist movements that take their inspiration from hippies and the sixties. For too long, that's been the model, and it never worked, probably because for most of the people involved there was nothing real at stake. Gays, blacks, and workers were literally fighting for their lives. As are these kids.

Me thinks you mean dont show up. I am talking about random yelling over a speaker. Very much a tree falling in a forest. Happens a lot with a minimal impact.

she was the chosen candidate by the DCCC and every major politician in the state and national Democratic party and a 100% grassroots candidate with no previous political experience or support raised more money than her in the previous quarter via small donations and forced her to drop out to avoid certain defeat. King did it by running on medicare-for-all, $15 min wage, and an aggressive progressive platform and by being relentlessly positive signifying what she was FOR in their message.

things are changing, cal.

the writeup on what happened last night
She's running in PA-10 which is relatively competitive now and Wasserman says PA-11 is unwinnable for a Dem.

she appears to not be making friends in her digs:

Before Hartman announced her decision this week, she called Corbin-Johnson.

The call rubbed Corbin-Johnson and her campaign the wrong way, illustrating a growing rift in Democratic primaries. On several occasions in this election cycle, local activists and the candidates they support have bristled at the machinations of well-funded candidates and their establishment backers.
In the call, Hartman noted that it would take enormous resources to unseat the incumbent, Rep. Scott Perry (R). She then assured Corbin-Johnson, who has struggled to raise funds, that she would be welcome “on her team” if Hartman wins the nomination.

Corbin-Johnson and her team interpreted Hartman’s call as, essentially, a proposal to Corbin-Johnson that if she dropped out, she could get a job on Hartman’s campaign.

Corbin-Johnson, who was born in York and raised there by foster parents, took umbrage at the notion that an outsider could swoop into the race and presume to have it locked up by virtue of her financial resources.

Hartman “wants a clean shot at the primary, and was hoping that she could patronize her way to victory,” said Ezra Kane-Salafia, a spokesman for Corbin-Johnson’s campaign.

“Christina meant to relay that should she become the nominee, she would work to earn Shavonnia’s support,” said Hartman campaign spokesman Mike Wilson. “Should Shavonnia become the nominee, Christina would work her heart out to ensure Shavonnia goes to Congress. That’s all.”

Should she get through the primary she's going to lose. there will be no enthusiasm for her; she will be hoping to win on pure anti-Trump wave. I've met her campaign manager and he basically told me that voters are activated to be against Trump, not for policies.

really stupid move.

President Trump on Saturday praised a move by China's Communist Party to abolish presidential term limits, and suggested that maybe the United States would "give that a shot some day."

"He's now president for life. President for life. And he's great," Trump told Republican donors during a closed-door even in Florida. A recording of Trump's remarks was obtained by CNN.

"And look, he was able to do that," he added. "I think it's great. Maybe we'll give that a shot some day."

I'm sure they'll get the usual, "Oh, he was like JK, you guys. Cannot you take a joke?", but the WH reporters pool should be all over SHS for these comments. They are not remotely funny and, in fact, are down right scary. Ironically, comments like this are exactly why we have the Second Amendment. Hummm...

If Obama could have run for a third term he would have handed Trump his tuchus.

But I agree.

In the face of everything else wretched, someone was bleating that no matter what happens, there will be no real anything as a result as evidenced by the Trump U settlement that hardly even stirred a reaction. It was just a simple fraud scenario involving the president.

Local news covered the march4Trump this weekend. I doubt it got any national attention. There were roughly a dozen people milling about around Lincoln memorial. That is a serious head count.

More fake news. It was the biggest, most beautiful turnout. It was a turnout like we’ve never seen turnouts before. People are saying it was one of the best marches ever, maybe THE best ever.

He's such a freak. He's mad that they started an investigation, but also mad that they didn't do anything. If Trump had his way, there would have been no investigation, but somehow they would have done something about the meddling.

I've been feeling really down about this. I don;'t see any way to come back from this. I mean, I think Trump will get voted out or impeached (assuming he's not made president for life), but I don't see how these lines that have been crossed will be uncrossed. I don't see how we can go back to normal when normal has been changed so completely. And I find it doubly so when one party clearly wants to tear down the present system. The fact that they do so under the guise of adherence to the Constitution, which they use as toilet paper, just makes me sick.
