That sounds like somebody trying to justify beating their wife.

“The left has precipitated this tense confrontational approach throughout the country in recent months,” Republican Rep. Trent Franks of Arizona said to MSNBC Thursday morning.

Yeah, its the left that has precipitated this mess; our Bully in Chief has not done anything at all to promote violent confrontation, particularly against the media.

Dent is one of the most 'moderate' members of the GOP. in Nov 2018 when your independent and/or lean-GOP friends say we need moderates like Dent in DC, remind them of stuff like this. he just wants his tax cuts (veiled as 'fairness and simplicity'.

yeah, i edited my post,as i'm wont to do, to add a piece Dent penned before this session of Congress started. he wants a 'simpler and fairer' tax code...but that just basically means giveaways to the rich and corporations.

The populace needs to be educated on economic theory. Not enough Dems are focusing on the big picture and explaining why the top 1% is cleaning up

Well modern Democrats are horrible at messaging. Why they don't go all in on the populist message that the GOP is the party of greedy, corporate fat cats and that the Dems are the party of the working class is beyond me. It worked for decades, starting with the Great Depression. Why not go back to the well now?

the people coming up appear to be. most of the people gearing themselves towards 2020 are either scrubbing their history with Wall St, Silicon Valley, etc or have nothing to scrub and are talking about medicare for all, wages, jobs, and expanding social security.

the Center for American Progress, a big center-left holding ground for a lot of policy wonks (the Clinton administration that didn't come to be would've pulled a lot of material and bodies from this organization) just came out with a job guarantee plan. when they're proposing this that means the ground has shifted about what is considered 'doable' from a political perspective. the groundwork for the message for 2018 is being laid. Any candidate running can essentially copy/paste this and add or subtract based on their district. some more liberal outlets will continue to push it further, and politicians will probably cater the message towards how D+ their district is.

trump played on identity politics, too. he also just lied over and over again about jobs jobs jobs. the democrats needed to tell the truth about their ideas about jobs jobs jobs and probably would've won without changing anything on 'identity politics'. they'd still be in shitty shape on the local and state level, however.

A friend of mine pointed me towards the CNN Don Lemon reality show, to see Jack Kingston perform his despicable human Act. That guy's voice and his mannerisms are like fingernail dragging on a chalkboard. Anyway, what he wanted me to see was Kingston defending the actions of the latest representative from Montana.

I think if you try to watch Don Lemon show, it's really thinly veiled WWE type entertainment.

My take on Mensch is that she's obviously an insane weirdo but may be right on some things. I think the Slate article even mentioned the FISA story which she seemed to be right on before the MSM. The Vox article from the other day probably did a better job than the Slate article in explaining how I feel though; in that she seems to be reporting on things and Dems are taking it and running with it as truth.

She's obviously a nutjob; when I come across something she says I take it as a fantasy and wishful thinking type of info and hardly believe it's 100% true. I guess the problem is that a lot of people are seeing it as all 100% true all the time, which is pretty fucking scary.

I'm also not sure why the Slate article says " We can, though, ponder how a taste of mainstream approval and enthrallment might have converted a libertarian into a left-wing crusader..." She's never claimed to be this and I don't think she's turning into a left-wing crusader at all. She says she's a conservative. But who knows, that could be fake too.

some of our best students are from muslim countries and many/most of them are no longer going to school in the US for college. This shit will have real consequences down the road.... the brain drain will accelerate. One of my best students is from Iran and is now going to Canada. She's a really strong science student and will now study chemical engineering in Montreal instead of Chicago. Another Iranian student (he's seriously brilliant) in my faculty family is graduating next year and plans to go to Harvard this summer for some program. He had to have a conversation with his parents about what to do if he's held at the border. This is a great and talented kid who we should be welcoming with open arms, but if not for his own personal courage, he wouldn't be setting foot in the US right now.
