several media folks now saying how brilliant it was for him to release this to 'distract'

guys, he's actually pretty stupid. he has no plan. he did this because he thought of it earlier today.

If she was really smart, Rachel Maddow would have called tonight's program "This is U.S.".

she was only played if you think Trump actually gets something out of this, which he doesn't. it just made people remember they want the returns and business returns. tomorrow people will still be faced with losing healthcare and this will have just been a pin in people's brains to remember the returns.s

also, if you sit on this you'd probably be fired.

drumpfco response was weird; the claim it's "illegal" to publish the info she got

drumpf is a psychotic attention whore

Whether trump meant this or not, maddow's and msnbc lose credibility here javong over hyped this and looking like they really are desperate for ratings. The fact that t.v. news fires people for, sitting on a nothing story like this is precisely the reason why watching this stuff is a waste of time. Might as well watch tmz.

i don't think Maddow is a good show to compare to tmz. she routinely does some pretty good, original reporting. Her Flint work, PP work, BP oil spill, etc. because you and media types were disappointed with this doesn't mean she was overhyping it

Perpetuating the "Us versus the Liberal Media" angle and bringing that back to the forefront of his supporters' minds is a pretty big benefit to him.

And even if it only lowers the volume on the AHCA backlash by 10-20% over the next 48 hours, that's a win for him. Suddenly the Trump tax returns is probably the lead political story (after the snowstorm) on the New York/national morning shows and the AHCA gets second/third tier coverage.

Whether you agree with it or not, both of those help him, even if just a little bit.

And after posting this, I turned to CNN and Fox News to check my hypothesis. Needless to say, that's the story being covered, not the AHCA.

Mission accomplished.

Bannon is on record as being, essentially, a nihilist interested principally in dissolving western institutions - like, y'know, the office of the POTUS. I doubt he has any interest one way or the other in the dumbass he improbably managed to get elected to that office, other than his utility as perhaps the most ideal jackhammer available to chip away at that particular institution's foundations.

If your goal is to diminish these institutions, what better way than to regularly, steadily, publicly demean them in any fashion at hand - whether via recordings of the House Speaker disavowing the man - who he's supposed to be working with on a particularly pivotal piece of campaign-promise legislation - leaked tax return documents, dressing quite self-consciously like a homeless person, allowing another surrogate to be photographed essentially dragging her worm-infested dogass across the oval office carpet, etc etc?

Pac, you're grasping here. And did she really break the flint story or did she just put it on tv? A good reporter sees this as a non story and treats it as such.

she heavily covered it in comparison to other national outlets and programs, to the point that she got write-ups in Michigan papers about it. she previously had covered the stupid emergency manager concept Michigan is still employing.

Flint Journal 'broke it'...it was an ongoing story over the course of a year plus.

Really not sure Maddow expected to score a Pulitzer for this. Who knows, maybe "someone" gets encouraged to drop more juicy shit, like one or more schedules that would identify sources of loans, properties, etc

Couple points:

1 - 2005 is an interesting year. Right before the real estate bubble burst. Sure wonder what those 2006 - 2010 returns look like as thats when his core business sector got annihilated. Perhaps that's what got him linked to Russia - financial desperation.

2 - WH turned around a somewhat cogent response in short order on a subject it couldn't have been ready for. That is, unless it was.
On a scale of 1 to Chris Brown, how pissed is he?

That's what I've read. Fewer and fewer US lenders would give him money so he went outside the country. The question is how much he is in debt to Russian firms, and how closely those firms are or aren't tied to their administration. For all we know Putin indirectly owns a bank that he owes hundreds of millions to

He's laundering money for the Russians and other nefarious characters through his properties. He has that island casino, the pace in Azerbyjan, the Florida property, etc. Way too many people paying him way too much for crappy properties. I imagine he's doing so in exchange for debt relief or just the ability to get loans. He may also have gotten a share in that huge energy company named in the dossier.

I don't know how this stuff can be proven, even with his tax returns, but that's where my thinking is based on what we know. It could be even worse (treasonous activities), but I think money laundering is at least a big part of it.
