why is such an emphasis put on being first? everyone has it within five minutes of each other and an hour later it's irrelevant and forgotten.

CNN is a sad joke. Its only purpose is to keep people updated on visual breaking news. They don't do that at all. Though I suppose a 24 hour news network could be a useful thing in theory, in practice, it turns out that 24 hour news networks are a disaster for democracy.

there is a certain allure to being first AND right. people who do that are congratulated and respected for their work.

it's a gamble every time they report something based on "sources" but usually it works in their favor. sometimes it doesn't, and that's when it's heard about and discussed.

speaking of sources - they get excited when they're a part of something like this, especially if they get to remain anonymous. they get caught up in it just like the media person they're sourcing to can.
