need to crowd source a very weird phenomenon. call it the carbon monoxide pandemic of 2020.

We've had 4- count 'em, 4- carbon monoxide detector calls during this storm. And listening and watching in, it's been that way for most fire companies throughout the county. And none were 'false'- our 4-gas meters showed CO levels of at least 60ppm in all instances. (and our meters, coincidentally, were just professionally calibrated on Monday- this happens every month).

not uncommon with widespread power outages- usually it's some yahoo who runs a portable generator in his garage and shuts the door.

But not these. One was a guy running a portable generator outside. The other three were professionally installed, permanently mounted whole-house generators along side walls of houses. No obvious DUH means of egress for CO on any, like a generator installed next to an open window or under an hvac fresh air intake or even soffit vents. One homeowner just said his generator has been installed for years, and he's had outages where the generator has been running for much longer durations than this one with no issues.

So what the @#$% is happening? Someone 'heard' that the high humidity level may be contributing- in that it's not letting the CO mix with air and stay low to the ground. But how is it getting into the buildings? I think all had A/C running. The typical longer duration power events happen with colder weather when the heat is usually running, so I don't think any sort of unusual negative pressure situation is happening to 'suck' the CO back into the structures. This is really bizarre. The people must be pissed- spend all that money for a generator for this very scenario, and they can't use it anyway due to CO. And edit- I'm now seeing stuff about portable generators used outdoors bringing CO in, but they are referring to gasoline generators- these situations are all natural gas, which should burn much cleaner than gasoline and as such exhaust much less CO (which is a by-product of incomplete combustion).

Googling doesn't help much. I think I'll try giving generac a call during business hours today.

tl;dr it's prolly stinkbugs

could just be statistical noise. Sometimes spikes in the number of something is just coincidence.

Could the storm have caused it? Something to do with the sudden change in pressure? I would think that would cause movement out of the house, but if the pressure increased significantly, and quickly, maybe it could force air from the generators into the house from outside?

Wikipedia says their range - which is wide - is supposed to top out around 62 degrees Fahrenheit.

There isn’t a day under 90 this week...

Spotted one of these scuttling along the path at Palmyra Cove today. What a beautiful , huge ant, I thought. Not the first to think that, since they're often called Velvet Ants, but are in fact Cow Killer Wasps. The name Cow Killer Wasps probably tells you as much as you need to know about them, but I also learned from this video they make a sound:

China may have flown and recovered a space plane. There seems to be a lot of guessing and grainy pictures, but it seems more plausible that they did. Google and pick your favorite story as this coverage keeps expanding (for instants today there’s a lot of agreement that they did succeed with the mission, and now the speculation is over what the craft did while in orbit)

Probably my second favorite science show of all time, behind Connections.

I met Carl Sagan in a small group of people in grad school. It was mostly astronomy grad students, but I was able to weasel my way into the meeting. Some of it was over my head, but it was still super cool. He seemed really nice.

Also nearly met Neil degrasse tyson (or whatever his name is). He was looking at exhibits in a museum in Santorini when I was there for my honeymoon. He was talking about Atlantis and aliens to some people with him.

I wonder how dated Cosmos is at this point. I thought about watching it with my daughter, but maybe the info isn't very good after 40 years.
