don't you guys think in geologic time scales? wtf
you sure do seem to have a lot of time on your hands to be on this forum? Do you have a job? Are you a shut-in?

We just filmed a movie there so I would think quite a bit of cross contamination occurred.

Mars rocks on Earth are definitely rare when you compare them to the amount of Earth rocks on Earth

Also, from the article you posted
Some researchers, for example, claimed to have found fossil evidence of ancient Martian life in a meteorite called ALH84001, which was discovered in Antarctica in 1984. (Most scientists regard the claim as unconvincing.)

he's talking about pristine rocks that people will want for serious scientific purposes. It's rare to find a sample that hasn't been covered in mud for thousands of years. This is why I don't believe finding life on Mars means "There is life everywhere," which is what some people would say. We are next door neighbors. Some of our shit gets into their yard. And it only takes once, if the rock is covered in bacteria or some kind of spore.

to qualify, martian rocks aren't rare in geological time. They are rare for people to just stumble over.

I'll be slightly more amazed when the process doesn't rely on bacteria. It is still impressive though.

I blame the science writers (or editors) who blow up promising early results into grandiose claims.

well the inventor would be more impressed too!!

The hybrid synthetic and biological system works, but not quite as well as Yang would like. For example, he wants to find a synthetic catalyst that can do the required chemistry, rather than relying on bacteria.

"Bacteria live and die," he said. "That's a problem."

(this is old news but I just heard about it today and think it's cool)

Photosynthesis might be a quantum process. Previously we thought quantum effects wouldn't be sustainable on biological scales. This is some cool shit.
