Anyone else hooked on watching AvE tear down or fix power tools or bodge together ridiculous diy and homebrew version of machining or fabricating things? The fact that he's Canadian and seems to have developed his own language (including the verb 'to chooch' which I enjoy) makes him seem like Youtube's equivalent to Red Green.

Time lapse of the north korean capital. Wasn't as dreary as I had in my head. No doubt it was approved by NK authorities before it was released, but it's hard to fake the general vibe of a city.

I'm not quite sure what you're seeing. Empty streets and promenades, forbidding plazas, a constant official presence. I mean, Pyongang has 2.5 million people and a huge bureaucracy, so I'm not surprised they have to commute to work at certain times. I'm glad the kids seem to be able to have some fun.

Any nightlife, anybody just hanging out on the waterfront, killing time, walking their dog, making music, running for the hell of it? Catching a snooze in the park? For all I know these things go on, but I didn't see them in the video. They would have been a gentle surprise to me, whereas the above is what I expected.

I was surprised things looked clean and new. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but that wasn't it. I guess I expected things to be more rundown looking.

Oh, I see. I always expected things to be clean and orderly, trains running on time etc., just sort of dead. I know there's been a lot of recent construction, most of which goes mostly unused, and I think a lot of the citizenry are employed keeping things spic and span, at least in the city centers.

That's only what I've seen, though, so I could be totally wrong. It may be there's a 24 hour party going on back in the 'hood.

What you're saying makes sense. I think my vision of NK was probably influenced by Soviet era buildings I've seen on tv and in eastern europe. That's obviously not the correct vision. I'll have to adjust. Rural NK is a mess though.
