Well, "dissed" maybe isn't the word. But both years, they wanted to sign him, he played a bit of footsie, then signed with the Dodgers and Padres and talked about how he didn't like CBP. His choice of course, and I can understand particularly why he signed with LA for '07--going home, childhood favorite team--and I guess why he thought the big yard in SD would be amenable. But I thought maybe he was trying to use the Phils to leverage more money out of those other teams, and I remember that the second time in particular, Gillick was pretty steamed about it.

My guess is that it wasn't the size of the lead so much as the time it took to add those extra three runs. It was a good decision.
