Poll: Halladay Crunch Time Decision

Postby JFLNYC » Fri Jul 24, 2009 00:30:47

Endless speculation, but let's try to narrow things down. Right now the Phils' top 3 prospects are Drabek, Brown & Taylor. Coming into this season, Donald and Marson were right there, too, and they seem to be guys who fill needs for the Jays and are very close to major-league ready.

So. . .

You're the GM of the Phils (I know that's not news to some of you). It's late next Tuesday night and JPR says: "Final offer: If you give me Drabek, Taylor, Brown, Donald and Marson, Halladay is yours right now. Otherwise, no deal."

No other permutations of players going from the Phils to the Jays is permissible (start your own poll).

I voted no, because it's way too much. I'd probably give up more than a lot of people on here would, but that would just be too much. I'd be embarrassed for Rube.

I want Halladay as much as anyone. But thats too much.

And it wont require that much.

What the heck would Toronto do with Brown AND Taylor when they already have Lind/Snider/Wells/Rios.

Even if I WOULD do such a trade, it defies belief that it would ever come down to such an offer. What type of negotiator is Ruben in that case. What was the opening offer from Riccardi - every Philadelphia family's first born son?

This is my gut feeling on the final package; Drabek + Taylor + Carrasco + D'Arnaud.

I think thats a big haul for Toronto, all things considered. And I think our system will be fine even losing 2 of our top 3, 3 of our top 5.

From what I know(or have learned from others) I might actually throw up if this trade was made.

That seems like a move of desperation more than a move to maximize your current assets. We should in no way make a move like that. We are fine even now. Yes we need rotation help but my GOD!!!

I mean I would take another Blanton in the rotation for the same value as we acquired him over this.
Do it again!

Really, think about how ecstatic we'd be if we acquired that kind of talent in one trade. There aren't many players on our roster we wouldn't trade for that kind of haul.

There's no way JP gets anything close to that. Our top 3 PLUS two more? I want to trade for Halladay in the worst way, but even I think that's too much.

I'd trade Drabek + Carrasco + Brown at this point, but no more. Or Drabek + Happ + Taylor, or Drabek + Carrasco + D'Arnaud, or Drabek + Happ + Marson + Donald. Or Taylor + Carrasco + Marson + Donald + Knapp. I think those are the few deals I'd make (or, obviously, something better for the Phils). If Ricciardi refuses any one of those (some with some minor prospects added in), he's a jackass. That first one might be the best, or the last one might be, but in either case I doubt Ricciardi would have the balls to pull the trigger. If he doesn't make this trade, he's a pussy/*sissy*.

at the moment (as usual, my opinion changes moment to moment) i would give up no more than one of the top three prospects to get halladay.
i would add in any other 4 players from the rest of the minor league system to swing the deal. i would not include happ. hopefully, he doen't change my mind tonight.

i hope see halladay-hamels-blanton-happ-pedro leading the phils to a blowout division win and a postseason victory sweep. moyer and lopez to the pen. durbz and romero stay away.

but hamels-blanto-happ-pedro-lopez doesn't look bad right now. the difference isn't worth more than one of our top young players. (happ included, because he's a rookie and young enough to be cheap through his peak, and because even his babip-adjusted numbers are at least league average)

If that is what it takes, I dont think Rube does it.

I said "No". We won't get a true ace but i think the phils could add a significant arm with dealing alot less than that.

Way too much. My goal would still be to keep Taylor AND Brown, but it appears unlikely that can be accomplished while still getting Halladay. My next goal would be to keep Drabek and Brown. That seems doable, because their are indications that the Blue Jays really like Happ and would take him instead of Drabek. Here are the final two packages I would offer Riccardi, and I tell him he can have his choice of either one:

Drabek, Taylor, Carrasco, D'Arnaud

OR

Happ, Taylor, Carrasco, D'Arnaud

If he asks for something else, I throw in Donald on either package.

mozart - while I love the prospects of both Taylor & Brown, how can keeping them be your primary goal over other concerns? Which two OFs are you going to foresake to get these two in the lineup? I know Brown is most likely a 2011 full time candidate in Philly but Taylor can't spend anything past 2009 in the minors IMO.

Way too much for a 2 month rental.
We now know that Amaro really is running the Phillies. He and Monty seem to have ignored the committee.

Why do you think he'll force a trade this offseason?
