This is a fun watch, what a hell of a run ‘08-‘11 was

I'm not usually a fan of bat flips, but Matthews' at 4:19 is magnificent.

That's called getting your pitch and not missing it. What a great call, too.

You know I've watched that bunch of times, and there is a camera angle of that launch job where you can see that isn't really so much a bat flip as he catches the catcher in the head or hand on the back swing, which is why he also turns around - I think to quickly check on the dude before taking his trot. Somewhere there is an angle taken from behind the catcher, probably from the 1B dugout or that little area behind home plate at the Vet where people could be, that shows it more clearly.

Amazing how many of those I'd forgotten. One clip gave me pause about starting Jay Bruce in the OF

Looking at these old Phillies games is fun, so many from 1993 up there. But as fun as that is, watching the 9th inning of some of these games, it's just a reminder of how maddening the closer situation really was. Looking at Mitch's line from that year, which I'd never really done before right now, he had a 1.613 WHIP - 1.613 as a fucking closer. I find Hector Neris to be basically intolerable and the highest WHIP he has ever had is 1.301. Mitch struck out 60 batters in 62 IP in 1993 - a respectable but not world-beating 8.7 K/9 for a closer - but also walked 44 batters, for a K/BB ratio of 1.36. For comparison's sake, Brad Lidge in 2008 struck out 92 in 69.1 IP, and walked 35, an 11.9 K/9 and 2.63 K/BB ratio.

And the splits - oh the splits. After the ASB, Mitch was effectively finished but somehow skated by so that not enough people - or at least one person - didn't notice. Yes, his second half ERA was less, by almost half a run, than his first half ERA (3.55 - 3.10). But his WHIP was an unsustainable 1.828. He struck out only one more batter than he walked (29/28).

And then the playoffs... close your eyes:

8 IP / 8 R / 7 ER / 8K / 6 BB / 11 H / 2.125 WHIP

The World Series is dramatically worse than the NLCS of course, but honestly although he got away with it he was 2-0 in the NLCS because he blew two fucking saves, the 1.69 ERA be hanged. His WHIP even in the NLCS was a not-good 1.5, helped enormously by his improbably 1-2-3 in Game 6.

Just for fun, I wondered how long it took Mariano Rivera to surrender 8 post season runs. The answer was 7 years, from his first postseason appearance in 1995 until 2001, when in the World Series he gave up 2 runs that got him to 9, the last of those being Luis Gonzalez's blooper over the drawn-in infield. That was 52 postseason appearances and 79 postseason innings to pass Mitch.

Ay carumba! They should have maybe given the job to Donn Pall or somebody like that at a certain point because it was CLEARLY a time bomb waiting to go off.

It’s been interesting for me to watch these 1993 games since the only time I was able to watch them at the time was when they played the Braves and it was on TBS or the Cubs on WGN. My following of the team then was primarily checking the box score in an actual newspaper the next day.

Phillies just offered season ticket holders a refund for April and May games, or a credit toward 2021 tickets

Hope the Sixers follow suit soon

harris is putting that money to work. it's going to be used to leverage buyouts that send more people to the unemployment line or lend it out to developers who want to close financially at risk inner city hospitals and build condos or offices.

and what were you going to do with your refund, mr. grotewold? nothing as significant as that i would think?

both on and off the field, in his short time here, he's become one of my most favorite phillies of all-time. still irks me he had to be a pirate all those years. one hell of a ball player, i thought he was very good but i still really underrated him.

Nearly positive it started with Eskin the senior calling him Lawrence McCutcheon in a tweet.

They're also issuing refunds for folks who bought the April/May ballpark passes
