Bitter-sweet. Sweet in that I like Wheeler and I dont think the deal is that bad. Bitter that it means we're out on Cole.

Several accounts I read suggest the contract is exactly what you would expect from a SP with Wheeler's numbers the last two years.

Yeah, I understand it's risky, but if Wheeler were less risky or had a longer track record, he'd be getting Cole/Strasburg money

think he tweeted their offer was in the 120 range. would think he would have gone there if it was in the 150 range.

And they were right. Will be interesting to see what the actual numbers were (white sox tried to claim the same thing last year with Machado too). If true, Wheeler will have truly entered uncharted territory.

This is about where I am too, despite my misgivings about the medical issue.

Wheeler's no doubt a risk, but he's one that the Phillies kind of had to take. They're now locked in with at least one significant upgrade early in FA without having to scramble on the market, which is obviously good. They have Price as the pitching coach now, who likely has as good a chance as anyone to unlock Wheeler's next level. And they made changes on the training side, which hopefully helps to eradicate at least some of the plague that befell their pitchers last season.

Probably always gonna be nervous watching Wheeler, waiting for the other shoe to drop with regard to his health, but it was almost certainly the most impactful non-Cole/Strasburg signing they could make to improve the pitching.

Until Cole takes less to pitch for the Angels or some other West Coast team.
