Does he get a re-do if he misses the puck entirely? If so, that's a dumb rule. The attempt should be over if he attempts to pick up the puck (in the judgment of the officials) and fails.

What also sucks is Farabee had to be sent down to LV (and Stewart had to be waived) to make room for Lyon to come up from LV

Yes. Nothing happens until the puck is touched, but once it is, it must be kept in motion towards the opponent's goal line
