Don't think you the Machado contract is better than this one? Higher AAV, opt out after 5, still 300+ million.
I guess it depends on if you think Machado is going to make $30 million total between ages 37-39, or if the new CBA radically changes high-end payouts (which kinda seems unlikely).

Bringing this over from the other thread cause it deserves to be answered.
I knew how bad he wanted to be on the west coast. Once the Dodgers jumped into it that was really a wrench a bit. You have to be careful on what you read from Boras. He will say the right things now that it's over. $45 mill a year for a couple of years is nothing to dismiss away, the Dodgers really did talk about finding a way to go long term but obviously they just couldnt do it. I knew there wasnt a long term offer out there from them yet BUT them just talking about it made me feel uneasy honestly.
The Giants offer was officially reported 10 years and the numbers will never come out but the money wasnt even close, which everyone kinda knew from the jump.
Like I said though if the Phillies had the most money they'd get him, aslong as the Dodgers werent close and they werent. It ended.

Despite a four-month negotiation, there are great feelings on both sides of the Bryce Harper-Philadelphia Phillies partnership. The deal, first reported by @JonHeyman, gives Harper an American pro sports record $ and the Phillies a centerpiece as they chase championships.

To me the opt out at 5 is worth more than 30 million. Chance to hit the market at 31 for another big deal if he has a monster first 5 years.
If you told me we could have Harper at the same deal that Machado got, I would take this deal over that every time.

If Bryce Harper plays out his contract - and he has a no-trade clause and no opt outs - he will be a Phillie longer than Chase Utley, and Richie Ashburn, and Larry Bowa, and Ryan Howard, and Cole Hamels. . .amazing to think about. Truly the start of a new era in this city

It's honestly a toss-up to me. I think your point is a good one, and there's probably some upside left on the table there, but I'd imagine that was a trade off to have even less downside risk. I don't think I believe that after four months of opt-out discussion that Harper never even wanted one.
