same here and i don't like buck! maybe he's mellowed out and plays well with the other children but i know that definitely wasn't the case in NY, AZ or TX. he was control freak. however if he got along and is comfortable with the rest of the O's expatriates and manny liked playing for him, he is a significant upgrade. he may be in his early 60's but he really isn't an old school guy like scioscia. hell, if scioscia could guarantee me trout, i'd probably hold nose and pull the trigger on him too.

Showalter made me think of what it is to be hired as a manager for the first time. On the one hand, basically it’s like being born: just as you know you will die, when you finally get that coveted manager’s position, you know eventually you will be fired or forced out, unless you get it when you are so old that if you win the World Series one year you can plausibly retire immediately following.

But the plus side is once you are hired once, it seems to be much easier to get hired again. Showalter is just another in a long line of people who have managed more than one club over the years. It seems almost to be the norm rather than the exception. You don’t even have to win anything. Look at Jeff Torborg and Jim Riggleman: between them they have managed every mediocre or worse team under the sun.

So what does it say that among Phillies managers I can remember in my lifetime, only Terry Francona ever managed anywhere else after leaving here? I know Dallas Green did but I wasn’t old enough to remember him.

Bowa managed the Padres, although that may have been before he managed here.

I think Charlie managed the Indians before coming here but that may have been on an interim basis (or I could be wrong). Of course, after he left Philly, he didn't need to, want to or should of managed anywhere else.

Charlie managed the Indians for 2+ years, he won 90+ in both his full seasons and made the playoffs in the second then was fired in the middle of his third over a contract dispute.

This why I often add the caveat that I could be wrong.

How did none of us mention Francona, yet? He has had some success post-Phillies.

The Brewers have been in the NL longer than they were in the AL (20 v. 19, 18 if you don’t count the Pilots year)

Wouldn't it be 21? They started in the NL in 1998

As I look at their baseball reference page, are they the only team to be in all three divisions? It makes sense since they started out as the Pilots, but the first two seasons in Milwaukee, they were in the AL West still, so they've been in the west, east, and central in the AL alone, and of course the NL central as well.

Moz/wolf did say his lifetime. I don't know how old he is but I feel like he probably wasn't around when ol' Death to Flying Things was managing (that's Bob Ferguson's nickname apparently)

Yeah, I'm just joshing. It is true that over the past twenty years or so the Phillies have either had very old (Bowa, Manuel) or very bad (Sandberg) or mediocre (Mackanin) managers. Fregosi I wasn't a fan of, but people saw something in him to rehire. Francona I loved when he was manager here, so I was very happy to see his later success.

I'm not sure if that record of rehires is good bad, bad or indifferent compared to other teams.

Mackanin was old too. He would be the oldest MLB manager by 3 years if he was a manager now.

Suspended for the rest of the season. That'd be like the Phils using Murph and Ben Davis for the last 25 games

A followup: they're both gone
