As someone who has dealt with pretty bad social anxiety in the past, I do sympathize with Greinke on some level. Harmless, normal things people do can REALLY irritate you sometimes. We can debate how normal it is for a grown man to be seeking autographs, but it’s generally harmless.

And when people request things of you, even nicely, it can feel like they’re targeting you with the intent to make you feel uncomfortable. I often had this feeling. “Why are they trying to make me uncomfortable? Screw them”. And there’s a tendency to want to lash out at them for it and do the exact opposite of what they want you to do, just so that they can feel as uncomfortable as you do, and they’ll leave you alone and you won’t have to deal with them again.

It’s a “natural” feeling for someone with that condition to have, but you have a choice as to how you deal with it, and you have to realize that’s not an effective way to react. You kind of have to do a cost benefit analysis and decide how your actions might be affecting your condition.

I got a lot better when I went against those instincts and “did what normal people do” even if I didn’t want to. This doesn’t mean being doormat or a sheep, but sometimes you need to do things that you don’t want to do in order to get better. Maybe he had a good reason for not wanting to sign, in which case, he probably could have explained it. My guess is he probably didn’t have one.

(Take it to the depression/anxiety thread, head case)

Do we have a name for the all-stars who only made the team because there was no one else on their team who was having a good year?

I have to stick up for Greinke here. Anxiety and other mental issues do affect the way someone interacts with others, even when they don't intend to be rude. I've been dealing with phobias and anxiety for a good year now and they've turned me into someone who's, depending on the situation, awkward socially to completely anti-social. It gets so bad sometimes that I hang up on my family mid-sentence because it's too much for me to deal with. I went to my local grocery store the other day just for a cup of coffee and had a panic attack because the girl taking care of my order took too long so I just walked out. I can imagine that she thought I was rude but if I didn't walk out, I'd probably have a meltdown right there in the store.

Neshek needs to be more understanding.

this really doesn't require an after school special. he got tired of an adult colleague bugging him for stupid signatures and said no, and then Neshek was a complete jackass about it

I haven't been following, but are people actually on Neshek's side?

Sounds like Neshek is just a super geeky collector. It doesn't sound like he was hounding him but Greinke was probably just in a pissy mood or something? Doesn't seem like he was one of them weird old guys hanging over a bunch of kids trying to get things signed before a game.

I doubt he gets them autographs now though. haha

I can see it both ways kinda. It's hard to really judge though since we don't know how players interact with each other and what the etiquette is. It's seems like its at least somewhat common for guys to get each other's signed cards or whatever. If it's something that happens all the time and Grienke was a dick about it could see Neshak getting pissy maybe feeling like Grienke is "big timing" him or something. From the outside though, following a guy around bitching at him because he won't sign your stuff sounds definitely pretty shitty.

All in all, what most likely takes it into asshole territory is Neshak posting about it online and calling Grienke out.

Why is dick used as a negative term to describe an asshole? What is it about the penis that led to this?

I think I read neshek said that people do decline and he doesn't care, he was just pissed that greinke told him at the all star game that he would sign something and then denied they ever had the convo.

Tbf he posted in a private forum, but someone screen grabbed it and tweeted it out.

At the end of the day it's a guy making $35m a year being a dick to someone making $6m.

Pujols was worth -1.7 WAR this year.

Pujols has 4 years, $114 million left, with pending bonuses for milestones (he's 41 hits away from 3,000, which nets him $3MM).

Trout has 3 years, $100 MM left.

If a team took on the Pujols contract, they wouldn't need to give up any prospects... paying $214 for 3 years of Trout? Phils are one of the few teams that could do that.
