Golf - The Future is Now

Golf - The Future is Now

Spieth/McIlroy/Day will be a lot of fun to watch.

Tiger had an incredibly depressing press conference yesterday. No indication when he will begin to rehab, when he will play again and seems generally not positive about his future. He was the #1 player in the world two years ago, pretty amazing fall.

Going to the US Open again next year. It will be three out of the last four years for me. Weird thing is I missed the one at Merion, even though my daily commute at the time went right through the course on the Norristown High Speed Line. Still mad at myself for not getting tickets to that one.

Way too soon for that. He's great now, but he has some swing flaws that will eventually bite him. He's going to have to adjust, and then we'll see if he's an all-timer.

Obviously there's hyperbole there but no young guy has done this since Tiger. I don't know how much I buy the swing flaw thing...there are improvements to be made and he could be a little stronger but his short game is so good that it can make up for them right now. This is probably the strongest time in golf, possibly ever, and he's doing this at 21. It's nothing short of amazing, really.

(of course he hasn't won this week yet, but he's well on his way)

His short game is saving him, especially his mid-range putting. Look at his left arm at and just after contact. His arm is bent, and he holds off the club face by not really turning his left wrist over until about 30° after contact. I don't think he can continue to do that as he ages without injuring himself.

Hope he proves me wrong--his father a friend of my son-in-law's. They grew up together in Hellertown, PA.

I watched the rebroadcast and Butch Harmon said some coaches would want to change that exact thing you describe. He is not a long hitter but is fantastic 150 yards and in and as you said, a great mid-range putter.

It's going to be a great year for golf.

Also, Spieth has two majors in his first 11 professional starts (Tiger had one). Tiger won 5 of the next 9 majors after his 11th start. That is insane.
