Love the footnote on the Phils vs. Mets map:

*Note: The New York Yankees were removed to make this map possible.

Little piece of baseball trivia I picked up while researching something unrelated:

The record for home runs by one team in one inning is 5, and has been done 4 times in the National League:

On 6/6/1939, by the New York Giants;
On 6/2/1949, by the Phillies;
On 8/23/1961, by the San Francisco Giants;
And on 4/22/2006, by the Milwaukee Brewers

Interesting enough, but the reason I found it compelling enough to post was that although it has only been 4 times in the NL, only one NL team has had it happen to them - all 4 of those instances were at the expense of the Cincinnati Reds.

It has also happened once in the AL, on 6/9/1966, by the Minnesota Twins; the victims were the Kansas City Athletics.

Fun, because the Mets don't show up on the national map at all.

Athletics also missing. :(

And the White Sox :(

I assume the Blue Jays were left off because they are in Canada.

the pals over at zoowithroy dot com had a fun take: http://bit.ly/1f7MZzr

Along the lines of their observations, the ZIP code with Citi Field IN IT, 11368 (and thus the ZIP that had Shea too) favors the Yankees 53-25 (and 5 to the Red Sox).

By comparison, the ZIP code with Yankee Stadium (10451) favors the Yankees 63-11 (with 7% going to the Red Sox). The Red Sox actually beat the Mets in the neighboring ZIP (10452), 59 (Yankees), 10 (Red Sox), 9 (Mets).

Random: this map also had the effect of reminding me that Cape May is south of Baltimore, which I can never quite get over.

The weird thing about the Phillies/Mets map is the colors don't match the data. Into Mercer and Ocean Counties especially the Phillies have lots of zip codes where they're more popular than the Mets, but the Phillies/Mets cutoff on the captioned map seems to be drawn where the Phillies/Yankees cutoff happens. Not surprisingly there are a lot of areas on Central Jersey where it goes Yankees/Phillies/Mets, but the fancy folks at the New York Times screwed it up.

They appear on the south side of Chicago and its southern and southwestern suburbs (and even in a few ZIP codes in Indiana). The Mets don't appear ANYWHERE, even within NYC.

The truly amazing thing about the Yankees/Mets and Giants/Athletics maps isn't so much that the lesser won nowhere. It's how much the lesser lost by. The Yankees and Giants grabbed the majority in most of the respective ZIP Codes.

I can attest to the Hawaii bit. I had random people (Hawaiian natives) come up to me and talk about the Phillies when I visited there last summer.

I noticed that, and I figure one is worse than the other for the respective teams: the Mets have been, with one season excepted, either bad or big time choke artists every season since 2001. That is a lot to overcome when your cross-town rivals are the Yankees, and, more to the point, I am sure their abysmal numbers are more than a little reflective of the terrible straits the team has been in, particularly lately. The self-identifying Mets preference, in other words, may well be a product of the moment and pick up with the team's performance.

The Athletics, on the other hand, have been basically good most seasons stretching back for a long while now. They had a drought in there to be sure, but they field a consistently competitive baseball team and make the playoffs with a fair degree of frequency. Even now they have one of the best AL teams. I know the Giants have won two rings lately and the Athletics have not been fortunate enough to win in the postseason, but still... they perform well enough that they should be some area's favorite in their home base... but they are not.

The Athletics just rejected a 10 year lease extension on the Coliseum. I think they may finally decide that to be the first team somewhere beats the hell out of being the also-ran in an admittedly wealthy area (Oakland itself notwithstanding).
