Your typical GP/MD won't recommend it, but have you any philosophical aversion to Chiropractic care?

Plenty of GPs believe in chiropracty, especially if they're D.O.s.

Hasn't been my experience, but don't think it's really a point worth arguing.

The real point was the question about considering a chiropractor.

i've had adjustments done before. but thats as far as i've gone. i'm not sure what a chiro is going to do for me right now. the pain is unimaginable and i'd be terrified of a guy twisting me in a direction when the muscle is this inflamed. i'm walking hunched and can't lift my head up because its too heavy for my neck to support. they gave me muscle relaxers and percocets but they don't seem to be doing anything to me right now. i think a heating pad on all day tomorrow will help a bunch.

Sounds like it's worth $75 to you , which is really all that matters.

If you want to know if it's the best copy out there at the best price I'll be happy to let you know if you want to pm me. It's what i do (well ,some of the time).

NO HEAT--- ICE!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not a chiropractic zealot. I'd like to think I have a fair and balanced view. But I think it would be a good thing to go see one right now.

My first chiropractic experience was in 1995 or so, when I was diagnosed with "pubic disastisis". Basically, where the pubic bones meet in the front of your hips becomes separated. Usually happens to women at childbirth. It happened to me on a dead sprint from left field trying to get to a short pop up behind shortstop. I hit the ground and couldn't stand upright. Went to the E.R., they did X-Rays, gave me muscle relaxers. Went to my DO the next day. She referred me to a chiropractor. Walked into the chiropractor all hunched over. He had never seen this situation before, but referred to a big huge book (he was also a teacher). BOOM, one manipulation later, I walked out upright like nothing had ever happened. That's obviously a corner case- not many other situations will yield such immediate, dramatic results.

So when I experienced back and neck pain a little later, I didn't hesitate to see a chiropractor. Now here's the rub: their business model is to keep you coming back as much as possible for "therapeutic" reasons. Recognize that for what it is, and you'll be OK. I'm sympathetic to the point that they're trying to sustain a business, so I go once a month now. It does leave you feeling relaxed. I get a manipulation along with the electric stim treatments on my back. Sort of like a mini-massage thing. Worth the 20 bucks.

Now last week I had a sore back after my first softball practice is 10 years. Probably a lot of back stress from trying to run on 2 bad knees (I call it a "gallop"). Took two days off of the rowing machine; when I got back on, I was OK for 39 minutes. At that mark, I was off my pace (15 cal/minute) so I had to step it up to get to 600 for the first half of my session. And that's when I really popped my back out. I was in major pain. Called my chiro at 9:00; she saw me at 11:45. Stim, hammering (whatever that thing is; I'm on my stomach so I can't see it); some deep tissue massage. Then she rolled me over to my stomach and had me raise my knees and did a manipulation to "pop" my hip back. I could really feel and hear the "pop". She said stay off the rower for 24 hours and try it again the next afternoon ("and come back and see me Friday!"). I was still sore- the muscle inflammation doesn't miraculously go away. The next afternoon I was still a little sore, but tried rowing anyway. Didn't feel great at first, but by the end of 80 minutes I felt great. Went back the next day and my hip was again "out"; she popped it back in again. That was last Friday; back is still a bit sore, but nothing horrible, even after an abbreviated softball practice Sunday night. Going back this morning- I'll probably fall prey to their "often" business model the next couple weeks as my body gets back into the routine of softball. Key is that once I'm feeling better for an extended period, to go back to my once-a-month routine. Else that's how they get ya.

Now if you go to a chiro and end up in traction, don't blame me!!! :dh:

A good chiro (my brother-in-law) may also give you exercises to do to improve your muscle imbalances. If your back is out of whack because a tight muscle group is pulling on you, then no amount of adjustments or percocets will provide permanent relief.

if its not better by weeks end then i'm going to end up at a chiropractor. my friend is a massage therapist and works out of a chiro office. she says the doctor she works for is really good. think he's the only doctor in delaware that does koren specific technique.

i went to a chiro about two years ago and have been back ONCE. he gave me exercises to help my hips and it's been great. investing in a good bed helped, as well. just avoid the scam artists or the guys that want you to 'come back'. a small temporary adjustment to relieve pain isn't bad, so long as everyone involved knows it isn't a true fix and doesn't replace actual science and exercise/stretching.
