Dazed and Confused: Random thoughts among BSGers

about halfway through a family party yesterday it dawned on me my uncle's girlfriend has probably the strongest Northeast Philly accent of anyone I've known. Then I thought of how weird it was that I can perfectly communicate with her because I'm fluent in Northeast Philly, but that it didn't even occur to me that something was different from normal until much later. That hood will haunt me every day

I was working with a voiceover guy last week who I've used a lot. We had never talked about where we were from until this past week. Turns out we're both from the Northeast, like 5 minutes away from each other, but we didn't know it because we've lost our accents. Another person there was from North Carolina, still has a twang, and couldn't grasp the idea of consciously trying to lose an accent.

The best is when you see videos from the 80's when accents were crazy thick. I have this one video from when I was like 5 and my family sounds insane. Though I have this one aunt that still has a thick accent today.

There was an Ali G episode where he trains to be a cop with the Philly PD and the cop he rides with is like the king of Philly accents.

oh yeah, every once in a while we'll watch home videos of Christmas mornings from when me and my little sister were kids. our accents were awesome. naturally mine kind of tapered off as I got older and faded more when I went to Penn State. but it's nice that since I've been back I've regained a lot of it.

that Ali G bit is one of my favorites of his

We had a bartender last night who had an Irish accent flavored with the Boston one. So she had both the sexiest and least sexy accent.

I love Busch Gardens. Haven't been there in over 10 years though. So much better than any of the lame Disney parks.

it's been pretty mind blowing over the past several years after having moved to the south and adapted to southern dialects coming back up north to find really strong accents where i hadn't heard/noticed them before

Good Lord...

Renato Seabra, a 21-year-old Portuguese model, is now standing trial for brutally killing his older lover in 2011, then castrating him with a corkscrew and wearing the dead man’s testicles on his arms.

“He put one on each wrist,” defense lawyer Rubin Sinins explained in Manhattan court this week. “He did this for his protection. [He thought] he could also harness the power. He wandered the streets of Manhattan, touching people, because he had the power to cure people from AIDS.”

Sinins contends his client killed journalist Carlos Castro, 65, during a psychotic episode: “He willingly told police. He wanted to explain why he killed Mr. Castro, because he thought what he had done was right.” When he was first arrested, Seabra told police he killed his lover to exorcise his “homosexual demons.” The defense is asking the jury to find Seabra not guilty by reason of insanity.

Prosecutors aren’t buying it: They claim the handsome Seabra just saw the older writer as a ticket to the good life, and murdered him when it looked like the ride was ending: “He want to be famous and make money. He also wanted nice things—clothes, electronics, gifts for his family. He wanted to eat in nice restaurants,” said Assistant District Attorney Maxine Rosenthal. “When Carlos Castro showed up in Renato Seabra’s life, he saw a means to an end and he got on board.”

The men came to New York on vacation in January 2011, but Castro quickly tired of shelling out shekels for Seabrea’s extravagant lifestyle and turning a blind eye to the younger man’s dalliances with women. After a fight, Castro bought Seabrea an early ticket home to Portugal. That’s when the dark-haired model bashed Castro’s head with a computer monitor and stomped him to death.

Even if Seabra winds up in prison, we’re thinking the other inmates will give him a wide berth.
