What kind of mickey mouse operation are we running here

a) they can't tow your car without a ticket from the police
b) if a cop gave you a ticket, request a supervisor

Brutal, man. Cops issue the permit and then give these guys free reign. Luckily I was able to take my wife's car to work.

Thanks for the info jive. Cops are saying there's no record of the tow and that a private tow company has jurisdiction once the signs go up, but I'll stay on it. I've had good experiences with my district and the Old City district actually.

Also as of yesterday there's a memo from the commissioner requiring supervisors to respond to private lot parking tickets because cops aren't handling them right before private tow trucks come take the cars. This isn't the same thing, but it might give you more leverage with a supervisor

Thanks man, it should work out. I also have a photo of the sign where you can clearly see the original writing is in marker and the "both sides" scribble looks different.

Just out of curiosity, what's the official rule on this kind of stuff? Are people who don't use their cars every day technically supposed to walk by them every day to look for signs? If so, I guess I should consider myself lucky for not dealing with this before in six years.

I think it's pretty common police post those signs a day before they go into effect but usually they're put up at least a few days in advance

definitely fight it. PPA is somewhat on the ropes right now due to press accounts of their slimy tactics. Their common strategy was when someone filed an appeal to common pleas court, they would dismiss the ticket the day before the appeal so they couldn't be exposed for being so stupid. But a lawyer plaintiff and a surly common pleas judge took them down, with a probable big assist from the inquirer.

it's not ppa, though, at least in my case. they just move it out of the way, supposedly within an 8 block radius, but that's only if they find a spot in that area. they used to not post signs until after they started so nobody knew. they do it in this neighborhood too (put up a no parking sign from aug 6-sept 1 on aug 9)
