I could see this being a problem if it were the 90s, but why not simply add fields to accomodate 2 different date displays? You don't have to duplicate entries - just have one field display the "euro" (or conversely the Yank) version.

Of course, days-months-years is opposite order from hours-minutes-seconds. Most logical is CCYY-MM-DD.
