A politics thread for things other than the 2008 election

Postby TenuredVulture » Sun Jan 20, 2008 17:34:09

With apologies to Vox, but in the attempt to preserve board speed, I just wanted to note that we have 366 days left in the Bush Presidency.

Other political topics of importance include the stimulus package (needed? helpful? grandstanding?) continuing problems in Kenya, Pakistan, North Korea, etc.

Bobby Jindal an Asian American and a Republican was recently inaugurated as governor of Louisiana. He's got some major challenges, included his pledge to clean up Louisiana's Jersey like corruption and deal with rebuilding New Orleans and the rest of the gulf coast.

Discuss.

Yeah, well, this didn't work so well the first time, but believe it or not, there are things going on in the world other than the election of a new POTUS.

Evidently, the Catholic church in Arkansas has decided that Catholic affliated organizations will not participate in Race for the Cure activities, because some RFTC affiliates (thought not in Arkansas) give money to Planned Parenthood for breast cancer screenings. I was wondering if this was happening elsehwere. http://www.arkansasnews.com/archive/200 ... 45410.html

Some unrest in China regarding Tibet. Things are starting to spread beyond Lhasa now. I'm not an expert on Chinese politics, but this could get out of hand pretty quickly.

Stayed tuned. This will probably make tomorrow's stock market opening rather unsettled.

Hey, is this where I can start boring Paul to tears (just him, because I imagine everyone else will very quickly tune out) with weird ramblings about education policy?

if you don't know what the wrestlers are trying to do--how certain moves and holds are supposed to work and so forth, then it might just look like too sweaty guys rolling around on a mat.

Oh. I'm replying to a Steagles post. Um. OK.

Unlikely. Though a bout of protectionist panic could put us in one. However, I think the dollar is likely to remain weak for the foreseeable future. (All this fed rate cutting won't help that at all.)

The Fed bailing them out is deplorable. This country needs a wakeup call, and unfortunately, it wont happen.

JP Morgan basically assumed zero risk in this deal. They paid pennies on the dollar for a company that still has legitimate assets. And if all of the subprimes go belly up, the Fed has assured JP Morgan a boatload of money to cover the losses. So, essentially, JP Morgan is on a freeroll here, and the stock can only go up. These types of things will continue to set a bad precedent that fiscal responsibility isn't important, the Fed will just bail you out. Now, instead of Bear Sterns being responsible for their poor tactics, taxpayers will be responsible.

taxpayers would've been responsible the other way too, it just would've devastated a ton of people

a 'wakeup call' will screw up a lot of people's lives

A ton of people are devastated. The entire workforce of Bear Stearns, for starters.
