I figured promoting him was a way to get him off the show (I didn't know he was the head writer, i know some of the cast are writers, just don't know which ones)...I've grown to really like the show, i didn't like the brit version, and I finally figured out why a couple weeks ago....michael is a douche, but his heart is in the right place, the ricky gervais character was just inherently a cringeworth douche

He and the girl that plays his girlfriend are writers - he was promoted to head writer after the first season, if I remember correctly. Both were given their roles because in the writing room no one could imagine the parts they wrote being played by anyone else.

Gervias is a god (his podcasts and old XFM shows are gold) - they had to give Michael a heart because they need the show to run for as long as advertisers will pay for it in the US - in the UK, they did the show the way the wanted.
