The way that UNC and Syracuse have gamed their situations with the NCAA is beyond disgusting.

really wish the school rushed to punish the kids who had nothing to do with it

That defense is tired. The kids know if a school is in trouble with the NCAA. If they still choose to go there, it's on them. UNC and Syracuse are sleazy programs and have been for years.

my opinion on this has been reshaped over the years, especially in the aftermath of the paterno/sandusky thing. it all sounds great in theory, but when you actually see these kids' dreams crushed because of something that may or may not have truly happened so many years ago is upsetting. further, comparing syracuse to north carolina is lazy and shows that you don't actually know what happened or is happening at either school. when this group of kids stepped foot on campus, there were no NCAA issues.

and if you do not think every major program isn't sleezy, you're naive and haven't paid attention to the news over the past 5-6 years. football/basketball are billion dollar industries; industries that pay for several other loss-leading athletic programs and academic budgets. the leaders at these colleges care about the bottom line and that's all. it's a facade to think any of them give a damn about the student-athlete experience aside from ensuring the current racket continues on into perpetuity. not all of those leaders have a Harvard-sized endowment fund to leverage. i mean, it makes a ton of sense for WVU to be in the Big 12, right? and i'm sure ben simmons' academic issues are the exception, not the norm, for 1-and-done basketball players. how do the football players at big-time schools squeeze in class work when their full-time football job is in-season?

right, wrong, or indifferent, i'm tired of the kids getting punished. the unc-situation has provided quite a bit of context for me over the past few years. i don't think the current UNC basketball administration was at fault in any way, shape, or form. but admittedly, i remember growing up finding it funny how many guys in the Guthridge/Doherty era were African American History majors. Now, whether those guys were steered there purposefully or went that route knowing the classes were easy isn't 100% known, at least for the men's program. but to my point about all the colleges being sleezy, every university has GPA-boosting classes like that; every single one, including the private, D2 school I went to. and every semester, the 100+person class was filled with athletes. coincidence? no. athletic programs are the lifeblood on any university. they draw huge amounts of cash and alumni support. and if you don't have those two things as a leader of the university or the athletic program, you don't hold that job for very long.

Apologies for the ramble.
On a scale of 1 to Chris Brown, how pissed is he?

That's all good stuff Savior, but current "innocent" players suffering is the price they pay for being in the big time. If my company gets shut down because the CEO was embezzling, sucks for me but that's how it works. There's no better way to do enforcement otherwise the boosters and crooked admins will just become even more brazen.

The UNC/Syracuse hate this week is as much to do with envy that they worked their way around the system to allow the current teams to thrive. Cuse by taking their ban last year when they sucked, UNC via stall tactics in a much more complicated and serious case.

Slime bag CEOs get busted all the time for various violations, often resulting in layoffs of workers who had nothing to do with it when the company falls apart.

I mean I get that, but it's just such a weird/poor analogy. Yea employees get fucked by their employers bad choices but in the workforce you have options. If you're an athlete you have to work with the NCAA and all of the bullshit that entails.

Also if you lose your job at 20 you aren't forced to retire because you aren't allowed to work when you're 22.

for RP:
Asked Monday if he would have committed to UNC had it not faced such uncertainty because of the NCAA investigation, Ingram said, “I think I would have.”

“I liked them a lot,” he said. “But I’m kind of glad that I waited.”

Ingram’s father, Donald, said he and his family wanted answers to questions that, to this point, have been impossible to answer. It’s unclear how the NCAA investigation will affect the UNC men’s basketball program, and what kind of sanctions – if any – coach Roy Williams and his team will face.

The questions about what might happen at UNC – and what penalties it might face – proved too difficult for Williams and his staff to overcome during Ingram’s recruitment. Donald Ingram said the cloud of the NCAA investigation “played a big factor” in his son’s decision to turn down UNC.

“We wanted to see something on paper,” Donald Ingram said. “We wanted to hear it on television. We wanted to know that they’re not going to fall into the same situation like Jim Boeheim with Syracuse. So you don’t want to go into a (situation) that’s already hot. And it played a factor in it.”

An eight-year investigation into the Syracuse men’s basketball program found an assortment of violations, and the sanctions, which the NCAA announced last month, included scholarship cuts and the suspension of Boeheim from his team’s first nine ACC games next season. Syracuse also self-imposed a postseason ban.

I agree the system at large sucks for the players, and I do think it will change over the next 8-12 years. So many headaches would go away if you just gave them the option of money or tuition, give them like 10 hours a week doing something productive (ROTC, community service, trade school, etc) and allow the athletic side to thrive as it will anyway.

But under today's rules, they do have certain options like transferring or staying put and not playing in the post-season. Neither of those is that bad.

Not every NCAA basketball player is a future NBA lottery pick.

edit: My basic point is that the system is awful and any crackdowns on schools are dog and pony shows. There's no reason for the NCAA to shake things up and punishments that hurt students are ridiculous.

this is why i prefer bringing the baseball concept to basketball as far as a minor league and multi-year opt-in for college

That's as likely to happen as MLS instituting a relegation system though; unless the NCAA racket gets busted somehow.

Breath of fresh air with Chris Beard. These player meetings are NOT going well. Mass exodus.
