Actually Roy addressed that very matter when he sat in with Jamie and Idiothead for an inning over the weekend.

He said that's always been his personality- but because of is job, people only ever got to see his game-face, and the only one to ever get to see his true self was his wife. Then he made a little joke about her being sick of it.

I'm reading 'The Rotation' by Salisbury and Zolecki and in Halladay's chapter it talks about this kinda. When he had that season with a 10-whatever ERA and got sent all the way down to single-A, he got a lot of help from a sports psychologist. One of the things he learned was that he had to stop being such a people-pleasing nice guy and focus 100% on his job.
