There's been some renewed buzz about the "Redskins" name for the Washington football club this week, which leads me to wonder what folks think about the above question. Essentially, if you could only change one, which would it be?

I find it strange because if the Redskins had wound up with Chief Wahoo, or the Cleveland Indians had been named the "Redskins," BOTH the "Redskins" and "Chief Wahoo" would have been gone long ago. But because the "Redskins" use the arguably most dignified Native American related logo, and the Indians use a word as their team nickname that has not been deemed in and of itself offensive (it was going that way for awhile when "Native American" was rising as the universally preferred term, but now "American Indian" has almost as much foothold), both survive.

I'm not sure myself, by the way. Ideally, both would go away, but I can see arguments for making either a priority, as they are both terrible.

kind of weird since they're both abhorrent and stupid and should both be eliminated, but "Redskins" is more overtly offensive to me. Cleveland has also begun phasing out the ubiquity of their racist logo so I think it's on its last legs anyway. I dunno how soon the Redskins are going to seriously consider a change

I'm a lifelong Skins fan, and I'd change the name in a heartbeat. It's completely indefensible. The only thing worse than the nickname are the insane Skins fans who "defend" it until they're blue in the face.

Dragons is an awesome underused sports name. they're fucking dragons! dragons!!!

the trouble with the polls over what people think about it is that the people who would be offended by it have already been systematically eliminated from the population

Unlike most American Indian based names, Redskins is a racial epithet.

Redtails has been suggested and it's a nod towards the Tuskegee Airmen. I think they should go with that and keep the same colors.
