6'4" 195
After a big junior season, Watson didn’t make much noise on the baseball field last fall thanks to his football duties and a bout with mono. But he picked up where he left off last spring with a huge senior season

Watson is big and projectable, exactly what scouts look for in prep arms. His now stuff isn’t bad, either. Watson will throw his fastball in the 92 mph range, with plus life. There’s more velocity in the tank – he’s been up to 95-96 mph at times and could conceivably be there more consistently as he develops. He combines it with a wipeout curve he throws up to 80 mph, a 12-to-6 breaking ball. He’s worked on a variety of other secondary pitches – changeup, splitter and a cutter-slider – and had varied success with each. He has more control than command and wasn’t afraid to pitch inside, sometimes to a fault.

Watson is committed to attend USC, but with talk about him potentially going in the first round, he may never set foot on campus.

Sounds like he has a lot of things the Phillies can help shape. Hope he is good!

Slots are ~$1.29 million and $0.94 million for our two picks. To get to $2+ million they'd need to be drafted in the top 17 and $3+ million is top 7. It's not worth the risk to go to college, imho.

phillies do the signability homework better than any team in baseball. they wouldnt risk these two high picks on guys they didnt think would sign for their number. it might not be right at the slot rec, but the phillies know the number. assuming these guys don't pull a frazier/workman, they'll both sign.

@jrfingerCSN: Phillies pick Shane Watson: "If a kid my age got offered $1.2 million to go play baseball, I think he’d pass up college for sure. "

@jrfingerCSN: more Watson on if he'll sign with Phillies: "I mean, you tell me, would you take $1.2 million or go study in school?"

@jrfingerCSN: Draftee Shane Watson on what his best pitch is: "Strike one."

@jrfingerCSN: Phils top draft pick Shane Watson: "My curveball is like my Visa express card, I can use it whenever I want."
