After a big junior season, Watson didn’t make much noise on the baseball field last fall thanks to his football duties and a bout with mono. But he picked up where he left off last spring with a huge senior season
Watson is big and projectable, exactly what scouts look for in prep arms. His now stuff isn’t bad, either. Watson will throw his fastball in the 92 mph range, with plus life. There’s more velocity in the tank – he’s been up to 95-96 mph at times and could conceivably be there more consistently as he develops. He combines it with a wipeout curve he throws up to 80 mph, a 12-to-6 breaking ball. He’s worked on a variety of other secondary pitches – changeup, splitter and a cutter-slider – and had varied success with each. He has more control than command and wasn’t afraid to pitch inside, sometimes to a fault.
Watson is committed to attend USC, but with talk about him potentially going in the first round, he may never set foot on campus.
