Anyway, if he's got back pain he'll likely still be able to hit. He's not making much so if he's hurt it's not much of a loss. And if he's a PH-only player, he's not going to make much impact anyway, so if he can't hit while he's got back pain it's not much of a dropoff to whomever they pick up off waivers in August to replace him

Why do the Phillies need him to make any real sort of impact on the regular season? He's there to stay sharp during the season, DH in interleague games and make an impact in the playoffs and DH in the World Series.

That's what they're paying him for, not to win 1 or 2 more games in the regular season. This isn't a team that's looking to make the playoffs. This is a team that thinks making the playoffs is a given and is looking to win in the playoffs.

That's fair, and maybe I'm just more pessimistic on the team's overall performance this year than most people are. I guess if the idea is to keep Thome 100% all season he might as well just never play

Yeah I'm not sure he'd ever get tired of such a thing.

According to fangraphs.com, Phillies hitters saw fewer pitches in the strike zone than any team in baseball last season. The Phillies swung at pitches outside the strike zone 30.8 percent of the time, which ranked 15th in baseball.

Despite seeing more balls and fewer strikes than any other team in baseball, they ranked just eighth in walks with 539.

Has anyone ever seen Rizzotti play live? This guy must be the worst defender of all time if he's not at least a consideration this spring.

As long as it's a bat. It doesn't matter.

Yurp.

The situation is fluid but if Blanton is pitching OK I don't think he gets you that much over Oswalt for that relatively small number of games, unless of course there's an advantageous trade to be made. In which case that trade partner might as well just try for Oswalt. But Oswalt might not want to play there. Head asplode.
