I sometimes spend hours a week on baseball-reference just screwing around with the play by play feature, which gives you all kinds of awesome facts and splits. Here's today

Greg Maddux has faced 8 non-pitchers that are now in the Hall of Fame (Nolan Ryan was the other, but im not counting him since hes a pitcher)

v Tony Gwynn: 39/91, 10 BB, 0 K
v Ozzie Smith: 17/89, 3 BB, 5 K, 1 HR
v Eddie Murray: 9/40, 6 BB, 6 K, 1 HR
v Ryne Sandberg: 7/22, 0 BB, 4 K
v Mike Schmidt: 7/19, 2 BB, 1 K, 1 HR
v Gary Carter: 6/14, 0 BB, 1 K, 1 HR
v Cal Ripken Jr: 3/12, 0 BB, 0 K
v Wade Boggs: 0/6

and against a few eventual HoF'ers

Bonds: 34/130, 23 BB, 16 K, 8 HR
Biggio: 38/130, 7 BB, 10 K, 2 HR
Hernderson: 7/29, 1 BB, 3 K

Luis Gonzalez has hit the most career HR v Maddux, at 10 in 120 PA

baseball-reference is neither a baseball nor a reference to something else in pop culture. discuss.

Of all hitters who have had at least 10 career plate appearances against Cole Hamels (31), seven have an OPS over 1.000.

Miguel Cabrera (2.083)
Chipper Jones (1.511)
Hanley Ramirez (1.404)
Carlos Delgado (1.344)
Ryan Theriot (1.318)
Carlos Beltran (1.218)
Aramis Ramirez (1.182)

Three more have a .900 OPS or better.

Andruw Jones (.938)
Josh Willingham (.933)

Gwynn was such an incredible hitter. Faced one of the greatest pitchers ever in more than 100 PAs and didn't strike out ONCE. That is incredible.

Thank god Cabrera is out of the division.

Todd Helton has faced Adam Eaton more than any other hitter. And he has a 1.272 against him in 71 PA's. But thats not ownage like Miggy Cabrera's ownage of Eaton. 12/15, 3 HR, 2 BB, 1 K

Of course, Madson wishes he still was

4/26, 2 BB, 10 K, no extra base hits

Did anyone else notice they added some splits this year? These are the ones that I at least don't remember them having before (all listed for hitter)

Game Outcome for Team Win/Loss (they had this for pitchers before)
Starter or Substitute
Leverage high, low, medium
vs. Ground Ball/Fly Ball Pitchers (they may have had this)
Hit Location - Infield, Outfield, Ball in Play, Not in Play, Fair Territory, Foul Territory, Pulled, Up Middle, and Opp Field
Hit Trajectory - Ground Balls, Fly Balls, Line Drives

Wow. Baseball-Reference has now added "bat reference", on certain guys pages which lists the type of bat they use. Howard uses a Mahogany Marucci RH6 Custom Cut

Stat of the Day is a cool button to press every day

Mariner second baseman Jose Lopez is tied for the American League lead in sacrifice flies with 9. He is also one off the league lead in sacrifice bunts with 6. I thought that these two statistics combined were an interesting mix, so I wondered if Lopez’s season is common. The answer is not usually, but this year may be different.

Since 1954 when baseball started keeping separate SH and SF records there have been 11 players to have 10 or more sacrifice flies and bunts in the same season. Here is the list.

lopez has had a strange season to say the least. on may 10th he had the same AVG and OBP (.291).

in bizzarro world jack cust would be played by lopez. his sidekick would be ichiro. and together they would go weeks at a time without extra-base hits, walks, strikeouts, or wins.

not a CG, close though

its the exact opposite of that, a tie that doesn't go 9 innings

the above game happened in sept, rain after 5, tie after 5.... two ND CGs, crazy

Charley Radbourn

This guy had the best ERA+ in the 1800s in 1884. I don't know which I like more, how much pitchers threw back then (678 IP for him in 1884!) or this bold prediction by the sponsor:

309 wins in his career. In 1884 won an amazing 59 games to set the all time single season record. A record which will probably never be broken.

And at 5'9", 168 lbs. he was perhaps the smallest guy ever named Hoss.
