Lenny Dykstra's descent

Lenny Dykstra's descent

Postby gusmoney » Sat Mar 15, 2008 22:15:59

Did anyone happen to hear Lenny Dykstra on Eskin's show Thursday afternoon?

I caught the last few minutes of it and to say the least, it was (a) wild (thing). Firstly, Dykstra sounded drunk or high as a kite and or skunk.

Nails was ragging on Mitch Williams pretty hard (in his intoxicated vernacular). Saying that Wild Thing not only didn't know what to throw at a specific point in a count, he didn't know the rules... (of baseball I guess.)

I've been trying desperately since Thursday to download the full audio (http://www.610wip.com/pages/136374.php_), however, the link is broken. 610's web page looks like crap and its links don't work, wonder if the quality of their programming is any good.

Supposedly, some of it was replayed Friday morning and it was speculated that Dykstra will now be on the outs with his '93 teammates for these remarks.

Anyway, FYI if you have not heard it and scouting for more info if you heard anything more than I.

Oh. I'm replying to a Steagles post. Um. OK.

I'm listening to the audio of this interview right now, here:

Dykstra does sound high or drunk or something.

Dykstra's always been a questionable character, but on the other hand it was obvious to me a long time ago that he was probably the smartest "baseball" man to ever put on a Phillies uniform. I always hoped they could coax him into being a hitting coach, but Milt's done a fine job.

If he could stay sober, I'm sure Lenny would be an excellent hitting coach someday - he gets it.

He's too busy making millions in business to take a paycut and go back to baseball.

considering dykstra's post baseball success, i don't think being a hitting coach is anywhere on his radar.

I love Lenny but I wouldnt want him anywhere near this team. I don't think his personality fits in here now. He'd probably end up getting into a fist fight with Brett Myers or something like that.

And this is the first time in 10 years I regret not having HBO since I'd like to see that Real Sports segment.

Well, "success" can be a relative term. As recent SI article by Chris Ballard(not available online for free, apparently) makes clear, Dykstra's holdings and enterprise are backed by at least $20 million dollars in loans, his mutual fund crapped out and he's currently being sued by a former business partner and his tax preparer. His financial status may very well be as rickety as the cartilage in his knees.

Hmmm. I wasn't speaking about a probable or even recommended future career move for Dykstra (becoming a hitting coach); I was simply observing that he would have the potential to be effective in that role, because he would be more or less the antithetical entity to, say, Dusty Baker.

Thanks mozartpc27, I've just listened to the full interview myself, good stuff.

I love Dykstra, have his jersey, but man he is....a character. I love his expressions, specifically here when he talks about Inky and his being "allergic to leather."

All that to say that I think Dykstra has the potential to be a space cadet.

I saw Real Sports this morning and Dykstra was slurring his speech and mumbling throughout. I'm no expert, but it looked like it could be a medical condition -- such as the beginning of Parkinson's. He still clearly shoots from the hip though, wasn't afraid to say anything controversial.

Cancer (especially cancer discovered only because Mitch Williams drilled you in the nuts with a fastball) can have a grounding effect on a man.

I am still trying to figure out where Eskin managing Dykstra's rehab comes into this.

I think Mitch Williams is saner than Kruk. Not saying much, but that is my opinion. Does Milt Thompson count as a star?

Perhaps he is slurring due to (prescribed) medication? I don't know his physical condition but I remember that last spring training he participated in, the one where he was fighting for the CF job with Glanville, and his back was really shot. Perhaps he is on some pain killers, or, to speculate further, maybe the habit forming aspect of those pain killers have kicked in.

Dunno, I hope he is okay.
