Bill Conlin and Hitler

Bill Conlin and Hitler

Postby Trent Steele » Fri Nov 23, 2007 18:04:44

In so many words...

""The only positive thing I can think of about Hitler’s time on earth–I’m sure he would have eliminated all bloggers. In Colonial times, bloggers were called “Pamphleteers.” They hung on street corners handing them out to passersby. Now, they hang out on electronic street corners, hoping somebody mouses on to their pretentious sites. Different medium, same MO. Shakespeare accidentally summed up the genre best with these words from a MacBeth soliloquy: “. . .a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. . .”

Hmmm, I could see Conlin getting in trouble for this one.

I know what you're asking yourself and the answer is yes. I have a nick name for my penis. Its called the Octagon, but I also nick named my testes - my left one is James Westfall and my right one is Doctor Kenneth Noisewater.

Yeah, well, one of those "pamphleteers" was Thomas Paine, without whom the colonists would likely have spent decades more under the thumb of the British.

My take here.

I'll admit that I hope the obese schmuck loses his job over this one.

Just because Conlin was around during the American Revolution doesn't give him the right to throw Hitler bombs around.

This is basically equating bloggers to Jews. And he hates bloggers. Draw your own line. I think people should email the Daily News and tell them that he should get fired for this. Is there a real opposing paper to it like the Post and the Daily Times in NYC?

Although this particular instance is a bit over the top, I think it's a pretty strange situation for the writers when we're all passing their e-mails around amongst us and they know it. I think it's problematic to ask for individual, off-the-cuff e-mail answers and expect their full and liable stamp on each one. I think most posters around here have made jokes, maybe plenty of them, that would get us fired or chastised if we were under scrutiny, and rather than care, I usually laugh, so I can't really hold Conlin's feet to the fire over a crass remark.

What's big Bill going to do when he finds out that there are Jewish bloggers? His world might collapse upon itself.

Franklin, Hamilton and all sorts of really smart guys were pamphleteers. Much smarter than the newspaper men of the time. Who remembers any of the newspaper guys? (Franklin ran one but he would never act like Conlin).

All of the great minds of the time used pamphlets to circulate their ideas. Newspapermen were hacks and tools for the most part. Times haven't changed that much I guess.

The big difference here is that Conlin is a "journalist", and the people he's responding to are, in many cases, his clients or potential clients. People in his position get judged differently because they are "public figures" to an extent. The Daily News probably doesn't want to deal with a backlash from people if it gets out that Conlin could be an anti-semite.

There are more ways to disagree with someone than making a racist/ethnic example. Why couldn't he say "blogs are dumb". That would get his point across, there was no need to make a Hitler reference.

I spent a minute poking around the Daily News site for an editor's e-mail address, but couldn't find anything. If you do so, pls post it here.

Do the e-mails say stuff like "I am deeply hurt and offended?" I have a hard time believing anything like that is true.
