You don't give credit when people do what they're supposed to do.

You give credit when people go above and beyond what's expected.

I'm giving him credit. Sue me.

You've set a very low bar which is unfortunate.

In 62 years no one has ever accused me of that before. Then again it must be difficult to see clearly from such a high horse.

"Gotta give credit to that guy over there who thinks black folks ought to be treated with respect and dignity"
"Gotta give credit over there to that guy who thinks molesting children is a sad, sick crime"
"Gotta give credit over there to that guy who thinks racism is bad"

Like I said, you set a horrendously low bar for humans. Especially those voted into office to serve. Apologies for giving ZERO credit - none - for doing PRECISELY what you SHOULD DO. If Cruz wants to go beyond political rhetoric and do something about this aside from lip service, then he will deserve "credit."

That's the tough part. Both sides have the right to assemble. Police need to keep violent clashes from happening.

(I'm not weighing in on the present argument, just saying what I think needs to be done).

Boy the videos from the ferguson protests sure are an interesting rewatch after yesterday. You know, when law enforcement literally battled and battered African American protesters who were livid about you know, real oppression.

At about 10 a.m. today, at one of countless such confrontations, an angry mob of white supremacists formed a battle line across from a group of counter-protesters, many of them older and gray-haired, who had gathered near a church parking lot. On command from their leader, the young men charged and pummeled their ideological foes with abandon. One woman was hurled to the pavement, and the blood from her bruised head was instantly visible.

Standing nearby, an assortment of Virginia State Police troopers and Charlottesville police wearing protective gear watched silently from behind an array of metal barricades — and did nothing.

It was a scene that played out over and over in Charlottesville as law enforcement confronted the largest public gathering of white supremacists in decades. We walked the streets beginning in the early morning hours and repeatedly witnessed instances in which authorities took a largely laissez faire approach, allowing white supremacists and counter-protesters to physically battle.

Guess I'd only urge not making this AT ALL about cops' response & keep focus on what titanic dipshits Richard Spencer & co are.

Nice photo of some pasty, potbellied asshole in a polo shirt, cargo pants & a baseball helmet brandishing a fucking tiki torch is the visual.

These shits need to be deprived by courts of many of the privileges of living in our country.
Yes, but in a double utley you can put your utley on top they other guy's utley, and you're the winner. (Swish)

I had a few pastor friends who were there. I wish I was there. Yes, I know that means I would have been in harm's way. I don't want to be a bystander next time when it comes down to doing what is right.

So the basics that I'm getting from them is that some policemen didn't do their job, especially when it came down to stopping the white supremacists. One of my friends, a pastor out of Indiana named Tim, said the following:

After the mob was done beating the shit out of the christians, *some* of the police "intervened" in riot gear, while others simply kept watching.

Another friend, who doesn't want me to use her name because of job security, said:

I'd expected white hoods. Instead, what I saw was preppy boys - quoting scripture and wearing polo's - intending to beat people of all colors.

This was her update when leaving for home:

I am safely back at my car.
There are far fewer incidents in the city now, but the ones that happen seem worse. A small, tight team is responding to these with faith and bravery I have no words for.
Keep praying for them. Keep confronting white supremacy, and its less obvious but equally deadly forms, systemic racism and white privilege
Together we will win this game against the evil Space Yankees! Eat Fresh!

Considering my point was about giving a specific person credit, properly identifying that person would seem to be pretty important even, one might argue, essential to any intelligent discussion of the point. We have to keep the bar sufficiently high.

Obviously it's long term and isn't perfect but Obama started to use the DOJ in a great way to hold police forces to task. Electing officials on state and federal levels who have it in their platforms to seek actual tacial justice would be a good first step. Philly actually did this, as you know my now it's up to him to follow through and the public to hold him to account.

Many of these guys were also open carrying...more gun restrictions.

Open up our voting system and get rid of racist laws designed to suppress votes. It could create a long term change in how politicians seek votes.

I wonder whether Bannon helped organize this event? This and the North Korea situation appear to be part of a calculated wag the dog operation.

I didn't say everything was done. I was responding to your rant about how every planner did a shit job and should be fired.

Do you know that area? I do. It's a crowded, tight area with many side streets that makes a true police cordon very difficult. The one failure I can see right now was their failure to block vehicular traffic, but the protests also moved several blocks away by that point.

They tried to move the damn protest to another site where crowd control would be easier and a federal judge (rightly) ordered it to be returned to Lee Park late Friday night. They were ordered not to interfere in the demonstrations, so there was a balancing act. And it would've been ugly, but it still wouldn't have been a disaster had one asshole not plowed through a crowd in a glorified alley at 30mph.
