The Tommy John Surgery Thread

The Tommy John Surgery Thread

Postby Stay_Disappointed » Mon Aug 10, 2009 01:11:40

I was watching TWIB yesterday and they were having a special on TJ surgery. Among others, they focused on Tim Hudson. One of the scary things of this injury is there sometime appears to be no warning. In Hudson's case he did't even know what was going on when the injury occurred and he pitched the rest of the game with it. One day you are out there pitching and the next.....boom! out for a year. I was thinking if throwing a slider had anything to do with the prevalence of the injury as it seems like most pitchers who have the injury throw a slider. Or maybe its just mechanics as well?

I was going to recommend that Hamels junk his stupid curve and start throwing a slider but now I don't know...

I actually just saw a dr today who told me I need it. I hurt it playing baseball this year, but pitched with it the entire season. It hurts like all hell when warming up and stuff, but once the tolerance and adrenaline kick in it is less noticeable. Granted, im not in a professional league where I have to worry about losing velocity. Scheduled for surgery next month...

Don't you usually see a pretty substantial velocity dropoff for guys who need it? I remember being there for Wolfie's last game before his TJ, and he was pitching pretty well but his velocity was was down (like low-mid 80's instead of high 80's) and I knew something was wrong. For guys who have a clear track record and you know exactly how hard they usually throw, its pretty obvious that they aren't 100% right when suddenly they're 5+ MPH slower.

Man, that didn't take long.

I thought I read somewhere that a rule of thumb was loss of velocity indicated shoulder and loss of command/control indicated elbow. It seems to me that I would have read that in a Will Carroll column.
