A great loss...

Thanks to Mickbayne for obtaining and passing along Smitty's obituary.

Of note, there will be a local (to the Philadelphia area) memorial service on Saturday, February 8, at the Concord Liberty Presbyterian Church, 256 Bethel Road, Glen Mills, PA.

(Brandy) only hinted at Halladay's personal issues during her Hall of Fame speech last July, when she said, "Roy would want everyone to know that people are not perfect. We're all imperfect and flawed in one way or another. We all struggle."

I haven't been on for a while and to see this is a massive gut punch. Smitty and I had many conversations about the Army and life in general.

RIP my friend, you were an RBI guy in a world of sacrifice bunts.

So glad I was able to stop by the memorial service for smitty this morning. Good to see his friends and relatives from the area and to learn more about the wonderful life of this man who touched so many. Not too many could draw a full house on two coasts, but smitty could. Great to touch base with Calvin, Bucky and Mickbayne, but most wonderful to meet smitty's wife Carmen, who was so tremendously gracious at this difficult time. What luck that two great people could find each other and spend so much time together, even if it was too short.

Service was mostly spiritual, but as mentioned in the other thread closed with a rousing rendition of Take Me Out to the Ballgame.

Here are few baseball pics from the many shared from all times in his life.

Very sad to learn of this news. Smitty was one of my fave posters and we were close in age and shared certain memories.

He was always well natured and seemed to take the board culture in stride. For those of you who had personal connection w him my sympathies.

Rip Smitty.
